Discovery Builders, a joint venture led by Turner Construction, has completed the $300 million Roger E. Susi Interdisciplinary Research Building at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Construction Dive reported. Architect HGA announced the completion on October 22.
Inside the Case Western Research Building
The 189,000-square-foot facility contains research areas for students and faculty across multiple scientific disciplines, according to the announcement. Case Western said the total project cost was $300 million, and the university described the building as its largest campus development project in decades.
Alongside New York City-based Turner Construction Company, the Discovery Builders joint venture includes Cleveland-based builders Next Generation Construction and The AKA Team, along with Berea, Ohio-based Adrian Maldonado & Associates. The joint venture won the contract from Case Western in April 2024.
HGA designed the building with labs that can shift and adapt to advancing technologies and equipment. A four-story atrium at the structure's center connects two laboratory bars and is intended to promote cross-discipline discussion. HGA designed the building to meet LEED Gold certification standards, and the structure includes energy-efficient labs, sustainable materials and a rainwater capture system.
Jack Kellogg, project executive at Turner, told Construction Dive that building the research facility on an active campus was one of the construction team's largest challenges. "Through detailed planning, 3D modeling, and offsite fabrication of major components, we were able to reduce the amount of work required on site and better coordinate construction," Kellogg said.
Turner's Higher Education Pipeline
According to akta.pro company records, Turner serves as design-build partner alongside Gilbane Building Co. on the $1.7 billion Wadsworth Center Public Health Laboratory in Albany, New York, for which Jacobs was appointed technical advisor in June 2026. The same records show a Walsh-Turner joint venture received approval to proceed on the $580 million Kentucky Central Utility Plant Project at the University of Kentucky that month, after Kentucky Infrastructure Partners reached financial close on the public-private partnership.
Earlier Turner Awards This Fall
In October 2026, Turner's Turner-FH joint venture was selected to build a 373,000-square-foot hospital for AdventHealth in Louisville, Colorado, with groundbreaking scheduled for fall 2026 and completion in early 2029, The future of trading reported. That month, the U.S. Air Force also selected Turner as one of eight contractors for the FARM III program, a multiple-award IDIQ contract with a $900 million ceiling, according to EuropaWire.
What Comes Next for Turner
Kellogg said higher education will remain an important part of Turner's work. "We see continued investment in research facilities, modernization of buildings, and spaces that support new technologies and evolving educational needs," he said.
