Crystalspace has secured €1.2 million in European funding to develop compact AI smart cameras for defence platforms, the company said in a PRLog announcement. The Tartu, Estonia-based company said the funding will accelerate development of camera systems that combine multiple types of imaging with onboard AI processing in one compact unit.

How the Crystalspace Cameras Work

The cameras are designed to detect and classify targets directly inside the camera, giving autonomous platforms the information they need to respond in real time while reducing data bandwidth. For defence platforms in contested environments, processing images within the camera reduces dependence on external data links and puts more capability directly on the platform. The company said this supports faster responses when bandwidth is limited or communications are disrupted.

The development builds on Crystalspace's experience designing camera systems for demanding space missions. The company said it is applying engineering precision and reliability developed through that work to advance European-built optical systems for tactical field applications. The funding also supports sovereign European defence technology, strengthening the region's capacity to design and build advanced imaging and AI systems.

Crystalspace said it welcomes discussions with defence manufacturers, autonomous platform developers and mission partners interested in integrating compact imaging and onboard AI into their systems. The company was founded in 2013 and designs and manufactures compact, high-performance camera systems for space and defence applications, with products developed and tested in the European Union.

Crystalspace's Space and Defence Track Record

According to akta.pro company records, Crystalspace has delivered more than 200 cameras for space and defence applications, with four cameras currently deployed on the Moon and more than 12,500 collective days of space operational experience. The records list a 2025 product launch of the CS-901 Piilo smart camera with onboard edge AI and multi-sensor support, extending the product line into the defence and uncrewed systems segment.

The same records show Crystalspace was selected in 2025 by ESA as payload lead for the LUMI lunar mission to develop the main camera system mapping the Moon's south pole, and joined the ESA Generic Monitoring Camera System project as a contributor alongside prime contractor Skylabs. In 2021, Maxar Technologies selected Crystalspace to supply CS-151 Kodas stereo cameras for its SAMPLR robotic arm under NASA's Artemis lunar program.
