Beacon AI has been awarded a prototype Other Transaction Authority with U.S. Special Operations Command, funded through the U.S. Air Force's AFWERX Tactical Funding Increase program with $3.8 million in research and development funding and $1.9 million in private capital, for a total of $5.7 million. PR Newswire announced the award on October 27, 2026.

What the SOCOM Prototype Covers

Beacon AI builds AI-powered pilot assistance software for defense and commercial aviation, including a cockpit assistant called Murdock and a cloud-based aviation intelligence platform called Lighthouse. The new effort builds toward a hardware-lite, data- and software-focused pilot assistant, initially aimed at Air Force Special Operations Command aviators, with pathways to the broader Department of Defense Aviation Enterprise and commercial aviation.

Development under the agreement covers core pilot safety features and pilot-centric route generation intended to reduce DoD losses from mishaps and accidents. The work also includes enhancements to improve aviation fuel use, which the company describes as a significant operational expenditure. Beacon AI said fuel efficiency extends range and gives crews more options to divert or manage adverse weather.

The company said human error accounts for approximately 75-85% of aviation incidents, and that systems streamlining routine tasks, monitoring platforms and improving situational awareness can reduce risk. "We see enormous potential in developing advanced AI-driven pilot assistance solutions," said Matt Cox, CEO and co-founder of Beacon AI. "By addressing critical areas such as error reduction, pilot workload, and operational safety and efficiency, our collaboration with USSOCOM and AFWERX positions us to deliver significant value to both defense and commercial aviation sectors."

AFWERX is the innovation arm of the Department of the Air Force and a division within the Air Force Research Laboratory, partnering with small businesses, startups and nontraditional vendors. In fiscal year 2025, AFWERX awarded more than 1,000 contracts totaling $1.37 billion and recorded 438 Phase III transitions valued at $8.1 billion.

Beacon AI's Prior Military Awards

According to akta.pro company records, Beacon AI signed a four-year, $49.5 million Phase 3 Prototype OTA with USSOCOM in April 2026, with participation from AFSOC and the Air Force Human Performance Wing, which the records describe as the company's 13th DoD contract. In January 2026, the company won a $4 million AFWERX TACFI award through Air Mobility Command to adapt Murdock and Lighthouse for Mobility Air Forces aircraft. The same records list a $15 million Series A led by Costanoa Ventures in August 2024, bringing total venture funding to $20 million.

Murdock and Lighthouse Deployment

Beacon AI's own announcement describes Murdock as supporting crews in the aircraft and Lighthouse as supporting planning, operations, fleet management and post-flight review. The company reports 13 U.S. military contracts and three commercial airline engagements.
