CoinGecko Halves x402 Data Price to $0.005 USDC and Adds Polygon Payments
By News Desk ·
Key takeaways
- CoinGecko cut its x402 API price from $0.01 to $0.005 USDC per request, a 50% reduction.
- Developers can now settle x402 payments in USDC on Polygon, alongside Base and Solana.
- The x402 endpoints skip API keys and accounts, with clients signing a PAYMENT-SIGNATURE header after an HTTP 402 response.
CoinGecko cut the price of its x402 pay-per-request API endpoints from $0.01 to $0.005 USDC per call, a 50% reduction, and added USDC settlement on Polygon alongside Base and Solana. Crypto Briefing reported the pricing change on November 6, 2026.
How the x402 Endpoints Work
The x402 endpoints are separate from CoinGecko's traditional API plans, which rely on keys and accounts. The x402 flow skips both: a client requests data, the server replies with an HTTP 402 "Payment Required" response, and the client signs a payment payload and resends the request with the signature in a PAYMENT-SIGNATURE header. CoinGecko's documentation notes that the x402 client builds this header on its own, so developers do not assemble it by hand.
Supported queries include crypto price lookups, on-chain token data, pool searches and trending pool information. At the new rate, a dollar of USDC buys twice as many requests as it did at $0.01. The endpoints remain experimental, and CoinGecko says pricing, coverage and behavior could keep evolving.
Coinbase first developed the x402 protocol, which revives the HTTP 402 status code so software can pay per request rather than sign up for a subscription. Adding Polygon gives CoinGecko three USDC settlement networks, and builders whose wallets hold USDC on Polygon can use the endpoints without bridging funds first.
