By ·

Key takeaways

  • H2SITE was selected for European Union Innovation Fund support for an industrial-scale ammonia cracking project in Rotterdam, subject to a formal grant agreement.
  • The proposed Rotterdam facility has a planned production capacity of 20 tons of hydrogen per day, recovering hydrogen from imported ammonia near industrial consumption centres.
  • A final investment decision on the project depends on engineering and permitting work, commercial agreements and financing.
  • H2SITE completed a second closing of its Series B round in June 2026, bringing total capital raised in the round to more than €42 million.

H2SITE has been selected for support from the European Union's Innovation Fund to develop an industrial-scale ammonia cracking project in Rotterdam with a planned production capacity of 20 tons of hydrogen per day, subject to the formalisation of the grant agreement. Business Wire reported the selection on November 4, 2026.

Inside H2SITE's Rotterdam Ammonia Cracking Plan

The project aims to recover and purify hydrogen from imported ammonia close to industrial consumption centres, advancing the industrial deployment of H2SITE's technology. H2SITE is working with industrial stakeholders in Rotterdam to define how the project integrates across the value chain, from ammonia reception and storage to hydrogen production and distribution. The company said coordination between technology providers, infrastructure operators and industrial partners is essential for safety, operability and efficient deployment at industrial scale.

The project remains in development. A final investment decision will be subject to the necessary engineering and permitting work, commercial agreements and financing. The project builds on H2SITE's proprietary palladium-alloy membrane technology, and the company has its own manufacturing plant in Europe.

"Just a few years ago, we were working with 25-centimetre membranes. Today, we are developing projects that can turn that technology into new industrial capabilities in Europe," said Andrés Galnares, CEO of H2SITE. "Our focus is on working with experienced industrial partners to deliver safe, reliable solutions for industries that are difficult to decarbonise."

H2SITE's Funding and Operating Record

According to akta.pro company records, H2SITE completed a second closing of its Series B round in June 2026, bringing total capital raised in the round to more than €42 million, with the EIC Fund and a private investor joining existing backers. The same records put total funding at $61 million and list six funding rounds on record. H2SITE has accumulated over 50,000 hours of operational experience with membrane reactors and separators, including more than 6,000 hours of ammonia cracker operation since 2023.

Earlier H2SITE Funding and Maritime Work

In September 2026, H2SITE secured €3.4 million from Enova to develop HydraNord Power, a commercial-scale onboard ammonia-to-power system for maritime vessels, FinanzNachrichten.de reported. The 700 kW system produces up to one tonne of hydrogen daily and is designed for auxiliary power. In June 2026, H2SITE completed a second closing of its Series B round, bringing total capital raised in the round to more than €42 million, Pulse 2.0 reported. gasworld reported that the round was led by the European Innovation Council and an unnamed private investor, with participation from existing partners Hy24, Enagás Emprende and Calderion.
