How BUA Foods Lifted Profit as Sales Fell

BUA Foods is a Nigerian food and FMCG manufacturer producing sugar, flour, pasta, rice and edible oils, listed on the Nigerian Exchange Limited. The company attributed the profit gain to lower production costs, reduced operating expenses and a more stable foreign exchange environment.

Revenue declined to N1.15tn from approximately N1.42tn in the same period of 2025, a reduction of about N270bn. Gross profit still rose 6.19% to N552.90bn from N520.65bn, an additional N32.25bn, after cost of sales fell 34% to N592.94bn.

Gross profit margin expanded to 48.3% from 36.7%, an increase of 11.6 percentage points. Operating expenses declined 20% to N66.99bn from N83.65bn, with selling and distribution expenses down 15% to N45.04bn and administrative expenses down 28% to N21.95bn. Operating profit margin improved to 43% from 31%.

Profit before tax rose 11% to N480.52bn, and earnings per share increased to N25.03 from N22.52. Managing Director Ayodele Abioye said, "Despite a 19 per cent decline in revenue to N1.15tn, driven by softer pricing conditions and subdued consumer demand, we maintained a substantial improvement in profitability through effective cost optimisation, improved productivity and rigorous execution across the business."

BUA Foods' Capacity Plans Behind the Results

According to akta.pro company records, BUA Foods announced a plan to expand capacity by over 50% across all five divisions in 2026 to capture additional FMCG market share. The same records show the company appointed Isyaku Abdulsamad 'Khalifa' Rabiu as Chief Officer for Global Procurement and Strategic Operations in January 2026 to drive procurement efficiency and supply-chain resilience during the multi-division capacity expansion.
