Genesis HealthCare System has reached new agreements with Aetna and CareSource that keep in-network access for their members through 2027, nearly two months after announcing that 9,000 denied and disputed claims from four providers and millions of dollars in losses had weighed on future contracts. Yahoo reported the deals on October 29, 2026.

Genesis Keeps Aetna and CareSource Members In Network

CareSource Medicaid, Next Generation MyCare Ohio Plan and Aetna Medicare Advantage members will maintain in-network access to Genesis through 2027 under the new deals, according to a release from Genesis HealthCare System. Genesis had previously said it would end contracts for Medicare Advantage plans under Aetna, UnitedHealthcare and Medical Mutual of Ohio and Medicare Advantage and Medicaid plans under CareSource on Jan. 1 unless new agreements were reached.

Genesis announced last month that it needed to address rising coverage denials and payment disputes, adding that it does not send surprise bills to patients that it believes should be covered by insurers. The healthcare system said it absorbs unpaid costs, which affects its ability to maintain staff and provide local health services. Commercial employer-sponsored health insurance plans and traditional Medicare supplement, or Medigap, plans are not affected.

Aetna released its Q3 provider survey on October 23, 2026, finding a trust score of 6 out of 10, up from 5.4 in Q1, according to FierceHealthcare. The survey, of 727 providers, showed 50% believe insurers support patient well-being and 67% cite administrative hurdles as the biggest challenge.

Patients have been advised to keep scheduled appointments, continue seeking medical care and use the emergency department when needed. More information and updates about insurance coverage can be found on the Genesis website. Questions can also be directed to the Patient Financial Advocate Hotline at 740-454-4335.

Remaining Plans Face January 1 Deadline

Existing coverage for the remaining plans will remain unaffected through Dec. 31. If no agreements are reached, those insurance plans would become out-of-network for nonemergency care at Genesis on Jan. 1. Emergency care will remain covered at in-network rates regardless of contract status, Genesis previously said. Genesis anticipates releasing another announcement on the other insurance plans in the near future.
