Turner Imaging Systems' SMART-C Mini C-Arm Earns Two-Year Defense Health Agency Authorization

By ·

Key takeaways

  • Turner Imaging Systems' SMART-C received a two-year Authorization to Operate from the U.S. Defense Health Agency.
  • The authorization confirms SMART-C meets Department of War cybersecurity requirements under the Risk Management Framework.
  • The security-hardened software will be offered to all SMART-C customers on request as SMART-C Secure.

Turner Imaging Systems said on October 28, 2026 that its SMART-C mini C-arm received a two-year Authorization to Operate from the U.S. Defense Health Agency. The EIN Presswire announcement said the authorization confirms the device meets Department of War cybersecurity requirements under the Risk Management Framework.

How the SMART-C Authorization Was Assessed

Turner Imaging Systems develops portable X-ray imaging systems, including the cordless, battery-powered, 16-lb SMART-C mini C-arm that brings fluoroscopy to the point of care. The company, based in Orem, Utah, was founded in 2017 and sells hardware, subscription service plans and accessories.

The authorization followed an assessment of SMART-C's security controls, configuration hardening and vulnerability scanning, according to the announcement. Military medical teams can now operate the SMART-C on Military Health System networks and send images to existing PACS and electronic health record workflows.

The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs recently approved the SMART-C for use with VistA DICOM, and the device is already in use at VA medical centers across the country, the company said. The VA has separately issued an Authorization to Operate to Second Front's Game Warden, a pre-accredited DevSecOps platform, Business Wire Blog reported on October 26, 2026.

"Warfighters need imaging that moves with them, and the government deserves trusted technology made in America," said Mike Orthner, PhD, Vice President of Product at Turner Imaging Systems. "SMART-C's ATO demonstrates its mission readiness."

The security-hardened software developed for the authorization will be available to all SMART-C customers on request as SMART-C Secure, the company said. Civilian hospitals and health systems can deploy the same configuration that passed the government's review, which can shorten their own cybersecurity evaluations.

"Hospital IT security teams are asking about device cybersecurity earlier in every purchase," said Rob Scorcia, Vice President of Sales and Marketing at Turner Imaging Systems. "With SMART-C Secure, any health system can now run the same software that passed a U.S. government cybersecurity review."

Turner's Earlier Military and Distribution Work

According to akta.pro company records, Turner accepted a Phase II SBIR contract of $749,872 from the U.S. Air Force through AFWERX in March 2022 to develop an operationally deployable dual-use X-ray imaging device for diagnosis and treatment of the modern warfighter, working with Air Force Special Operations Command teams. The same records show Turner appointed Vertec Scientific Ltd. as its UK distributor for the SMART-C mini C-arm in June 2026, with Vertec Managing Director Kate O'Reilly signing the agreement with Turner Vice President Rob Scorcia.

What Turner Plans Next for ENDURO DR

Turner plans to pursue the same authorization for its ENDURO DR portable digital X-ray system, the company said. Turner also said it continues to work with the U.S. military to bring point-of-care imaging to clinicians who care for service members and veterans.
