Vistar Warehouse Workers in Oakland Vote to Join Teamsters Local 853

Thirty-seven warehouse workers at Vistar in Oakland voted to join Teamsters Local 853, the union announced on October 19, 2026. The workers join 30 Vistar drivers who became Teamsters in 2025, giving Local 853 wall-to-wall representation at the Oakland facility, PR Newswire reported.

Vistar Workers Win Union Vote in Oakland

Vistar is a U.S. specialty distributor of candy, snacks and beverages and a division of Performance Food Group, according to company records. The Oakland workers organized to secure stronger wages, better benefits and improved working conditions, the union said.

Steve Beck, Secretary-Treasurer of Local 853, said, "We're thrilled to welcome these hardworking brothers and sisters to Local 853." He added that the vote shows workers are united and ready to build a stronger future.

Vistar spent more than $146,000 on an anti-union campaign during the organizing effort, according to the union. Tom Erickson, Director of the Teamsters Warehouse Division, said, "Despite the company's anti-union campaign, these workers stood strong and won."

Michael Townsend, a Vistar warehouse worker and new Local 853 member, said the drivers' organizing effort inspired the warehouse workers. "We saw them stand together and fight for a strong first contract," he said. "Now it's our turn to have a voice on the job and the protections that come with a Teamster contract."

The Teamsters represent 2,000 workers at Performance Food Group and its subsidiaries nationwide. The International Brotherhood of Teamsters, founded in 1903, represents 1.3 million people in the U.S., Canada and Puerto Rico.
