The University of Madras Syndicate approved a proposal to sign a Memorandum of Understanding with Sutherland Global Services to set up an AI laboratory at the Department of Women Studies, with the company offering to upgrade its earlier ₹50 lakh allocation for a Gender Lab. The Hindu reported the approval on November 6, 2026.
What the Sutherland MoU Covers
The Gender Lab was set up at the department under an earlier MoU signed in April 2019 and offered an online course on Gender Sensitisation and Workplace Readiness to students across the university's four campuses. The lockdown led to a long closure of the lab that destroyed the digital equipment, and Sutherland has now come forward to renew the MoU and upgrade the lab with new systems and infrastructure.
Beyond reviving the Gender Lab, the MoU seeks to establish an Artificial Intelligence Lab for Inclusive Education that would develop e-modules for a course on Application of Artificial Intelligence. The Syndicate also cleared long-pending issues holding up faculty recruitment at Arts and Science self-financing colleges and government-aided colleges running self-financing courses. It approved resumption of special drives to grant approval of qualifications to Assistant Professors for the current academic year, with university records indicating about 400 proposals from affiliated colleges seeking approval of faculty qualifications.
The Syndicate approved the appointment of principals to Agurchand Manmull Jain College, Ramakrishna Mission Vivekananda College, Shrimathi Devkunvar Nanalal Bhatt Vaishnav College for Women, Sir Theagaraya College, and Madras School of Social Work.
