HUTCHMED's Sovleplenib Gets FDA Orphan Drug Designation for Autoimmune Hemolytic Anemia

By ·

Key takeaways

  • The FDA granted orphan drug designation to HUTCHMED's sovleplenib for autoimmune hemolytic anemia in November 2026.
  • The designation makes sovleplenib eligible for 7 years of US market exclusivity if the FDA approves it for the indication.
  • Sovleplenib's earlier orphan designation, for primary immune thrombocytopenia, was announced in October 2026.

HUTCHMED (China) Limited said the US Food and Drug Administration granted Orphan Drug Designation to sovleplenib for the treatment of autoimmune hemolytic anemia, the second such designation for the drug. The company announced the designation on November 4, 2026, according to GlobeNewswire. HUTCHMED is a commercial-stage biopharmaceutical company developing targeted therapies and immunotherapies for cancer and immunological diseases, with four medicines marketed in China.

What the AIHA Designation Covers

Sovleplenib is a novel, selective, oral spleen tyrosine kinase inhibitor taken once daily. The FDA's Orphan Drug Designation program covers drugs and biologics intended to treat, diagnose or prevent rare diseases affecting fewer than 200,000 people in the United States. If approved for the designated indication, a drug with the designation is eligible for 7 years of US market exclusivity, tax credits for qualified clinical trials, user fee waivers under the Prescription Drug User Fee Act and specialized regulatory guidance during development.

AIHA is an autoimmune disorder in which antibodies against red blood cells cause their destruction. The company said the incidence is estimated at 0.8-3.0 per 100,000 adults per year, with an estimated prevalence of 17 per 100,000 adults and a death rate of 8-11%. Warm AIHA is the most common form, accounting for about 75-80% of all adult AIHA cases. HUTCHMED retains all rights to sovleplenib worldwide.

Sovleplenib's Earlier FDA and China Steps

The AIHA designation follows the FDA's orphan drug designation for sovleplenib in primary immune thrombocytopenia, announced in October 2026, which makes the drug eligible for seven years of US market exclusivity upon approval, Stock Titan reported. In China, New Drug Applications for sovleplenib in primary ITP and warm AIHA are under review by the National Medical Products Administration, supported by data from the pivotal ESLIM-01 and ESLIM-02 trials.

Rare Disease Designations Across the Sector

Cullinan Therapeutics received regulatory clearance for a global Phase 1b/2a trial of velinotamig in immune thrombocytopenia and warm autoimmune hemolytic anemia, Yahoo reported on October 31, 2026. The Board of Healthcare Funders proposed a voluntary risk-pooling mechanism called EquiAxis to share the costs of high-cost rare disease treatments, BusinessLIVE reported on November 4, 2026.

HUTCHMED's November 5 Webcast

HUTCHMED will co-host a webcast with Citigroup on November 5, 2026, to discuss Phase III savolitinib data in MET-driven non-small cell lung cancer, featuring insights from the SANOVO and SAFFRON trials, Stock Titan reported on October 27, 2026.
