By News Desk ·
Key takeaways
- TotalEnergies signed a collaboration agreement with PETRONAS, JOGMEC and JGC Corporation to help develop SEA METEC, a methane technology evaluation center based in Malaysia.
- A memorandum of understanding with Sonangol covers methane detection, flaring reduction, energy efficiency and possible support from the World Bank's GFMR Fund.
- A second one-month AUSEA drone campaign with Oil India follows a first campaign over 20 OIL-operated sites in Assam.
TotalEnergies signed a collaboration agreement with PETRONAS, JOGMEC and JGC Corporation to help develop a Southeast Asia methane technology evaluation center in Malaysia, and a memorandum of understanding with Sonangol on methane reduction in Angola, Business Wire reported on November 1, 2026. The company also set a second AUSEA field campaign with Oil India.
How the SEA METEC Center Will Work
PETRONAS will lead SEA METEC, a regional center based in Malaysia that will evaluate methane emissions measurement and monitoring technologies across Southeast Asia. TotalEnergies will contribute expertise from more than 10 years of running its own TADI center, described in the announcement as Europe's only facility dedicated to evaluating methane detection and quantification technologies. The center is intended to support harmonization of measurement and quantification methods so companies can better detect, measure and reduce emissions.
JOGMEC, the Japan Organization for Metals and Energy Security, is a party to the agreement. In September 2026, JOGMEC awarded a tender to buy 320,000 kilolitres, or 2 million barrels, of Abu Dhabi Murban crude from Mitsui for delivery between October 15 and December 14, The future of trading reported.
Sonangol Deal and the Second Oil India Campaign
The Sonangol memorandum covers methane emissions detection, measurement, monitoring and reduction, plus sharing of best practices, methodologies and technical expertise. The two companies are identifying solutions to cut methane emissions and flaring, improve energy efficiency, support facility electrification and advance carbon management, and the cooperation extends to greenhouse gas reporting, technical training and possible financing including support from the World Bank's Global Flaring and Methane Reduction Fund.
With Oil India, a second one-month AUSEA campaign will extend the drone-mounted dual sensor, which detects methane and carbon dioxide and identifies their source, to additional OIL-operated sites. A first one-month campaign covered 20 OIL-operated sites in Assam and gave OIL data for its emissions reporting.
"Our cooperation with PETRONAS in Malaysia, SONANGOL in Angola and OIL in India illustrates TotalEnergies' commitment to the OGDC and the momentum it has created among international and national companies," said Patrick Pouyanné, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of TotalEnergies.
