Pick n Pay Narrows First-Half Loss as Boxer Lifts Net Cash to About R10bn

By ·

Key takeaways

  • Pick n Pay's core supermarket turnover was broadly flat at R36.4bn, with a trading loss after lease interest of R1.1bn.
  • Net cash climbed to about R10bn from net debt of roughly R11.5bn three years earlier, with Boxer as the group's earnings engine.
  • CEO Sean Summers estimated the Middle East conflict cost about three percentage points of sales growth, with each 1% of lost top-line sales costing R140m-R150m of income.

Pick n Pay's first-half headline loss narrowed by about a third, with gross margins improving and net cash climbing to about R10bn from net debt of roughly R11.5bn three years earlier, BusinessLIVE reported. The South African retailer's core supermarket business remained loss-making in the six months to August.

Pick n Pay's Supermarket Loss and Boxer's Cash

Pick n Pay Stores operates supermarkets, the Boxer discount chain and Pick n Pay GO convenience stores, serving mass-market consumers through physical retail and its asap! digital ecosystem. Justin Hollis, portfolio manager at Abax Investments, said the results showed the recovery was gaining traction through improved gross margins, disciplined cost control and a narrower core supermarket loss.

Hollis said Pick n Pay supermarkets' turnover was broadly flat at R36.4bn, and the trading loss after lease interest was still substantial at R1.1bn. Boxer has become the group's earnings engine and helped restore financial stability. Boxer reported a 9.1% rise in headline earnings to R565m for the first half, opening its 600th store, with turnover up 6.3% to R24.1bn, BusinessLIVE reported.

Stephan Erasmus, investment analyst at Anchor Capital, said the headline loss narrowed by about a third, driven by margins and cost control rather than sales, which were essentially flat. CEO Sean Summers said the turnaround should be judged by the actions that drive profits. "You don't return to profit and then start doing all of the good stuff after that. The profit flows from that, and that is the journey that we're on," he said.

Pick n Pay's Boxer Stake Sale and Group Scale

Pick n Pay sold about 12.5% of Boxer, or 57.3 million shares, through a private placement at R82 per share, raising R4.7 billion while retaining a 53.1% majority, according to akta.pro company records. The same records put total turnover for FY2026 at R120.3bn, a 3.4% increase year-on-year, and Boxer's turnover for the year to end February 2026 at R46.7bn, up 12.3% on a comparable basis.

Pick n Pay's Path to the Interim Results

In October 2026, Pick n Pay withdrew its restructuring consultation process and forecast a 25%-35% narrowing in first-half headline loss per share, Reuters reported. In September 2026, the retailer appointed Spencer Sonn as CEO-designate effective February 2027, with more than 30 years of retail leadership experience, to work with Summers on a planned transition, BusinessLIVE reported. In August 2026, Pick n Pay awarded Summers two million conditional shares worth about $2.4 million, issued at no cost on 28 August, Business Insider reported.

Pick n Pay's 2027 Labour Savings and 2029 Target

Erasmus estimated that meaningful savings from the revised labour agreement will only begin flowing through from March 2027. Pick n Pay's target remains break-even in its core supermarket business by 2029.
