Halifax Customers Have Until October 31 to Move to Lloyds App Before Shutdown

By ·

Key takeaways

  • Halifax customers must move to the Lloyds banking app by October 31 before Halifax app and online banking shut down on November 1.
  • Account numbers, sort codes, card details and PINs stay the same after the switch, and standing orders and Direct Debits continue as normal.
  • Halifax branches are expected to be rebranded as Lloyds during 2027, and the group says the rebrand will not result in branch closures.

Halifax customers have until October 31 to move to the Lloyds banking app before Halifax's app and online banking services are shut down on November 1, Express.co.uk reported. The change is part of Lloyds Banking Group's plan to phase out the 173-year-old Halifax brand.

Halifax Sets October 31 Deadline for App Switch

Halifax began closing its app in stages on October 5, sending customers messages explaining how to make the switch. Customers who still use the Halifax app need to move to Lloyds to keep checking balances, making payments and managing accounts online. On its website, the bank said: "We've started to close the Halifax app and online banking so it's now time to start using Lloyds."

Customers start by logging into the existing Halifax app and following the instructions, then download the Lloyds app and continue with their existing login details. Accounts, scheduled payments, statements and digital letters should all be available through the new service. Customers will not need to change their bank account numbers, sort codes, card details or PINs, and standing orders and Direct Debits continue as normal. Those already using the Lloyds app do not need to take further action, and debit and credit cards will keep working even for customers who have not moved.

The changes follow Lloyds Banking Group's announcement in July that Halifax would eventually be brought under the Lloyds name. Halifax branches are expected to be rebranded as Lloyds during 2027, although the group says the rebrand itself will not result in branch closures. Halifax has warned that it will not ask customers to transfer money or provide security information as part of the switch.

Halifax's Place Inside Lloyds Banking Group

Halifax operates as a trading brand of Lloyds Banking Group, alongside Lloyds Bank and Bank of Scotland, according to akta.pro company records. The same records describe Halifax as Britain's largest residential mortgage lender, founded in 1853 and in managed run-down ahead of a 2026 brand retirement. The records list Amanda Bryden as Head of Mortgages. They also record that integration of Halifax's IT platform with Lloyds Banking Group infrastructure suffered outages in March 2026 affecting Halifax, Lloyds and Bank of Scotland customers.

Branch Closures Before the App Shutdown

Halifax closed 26 branches across the UK in October, with dates listed for each location, Express.co.uk reported. In September, Halifax closed 14 branches, starting with Horsham, Cannock and Barrow-in-Furness on September 8-10, the same outlet reported. The Mirror reported in September that Halifax's email confirmed the app closure and that FSCS protection remains unchanged at £120,000 per person.
