Syensqo Halts C6O4 Fluorosurfactant Output at Spinetta Marengo, Meeting 2026 Pledge
By News Desk ·
Key takeaways
- Syensqo ended C6O4 production at its Spinetta Marengo site in Italy, completing a phase-out pledge made in 2022.
- Nearly 100% of Syensqo's fluoropolymers are now made without PFAS processing aids, with about 1% of the site's production volume still requiring research.
- CEO Mike Radossich said the milestone reflects years of investment in innovation and manufacturing technologies that eliminate fluorosurfactants.
Syensqo has ended production of C6O4, the last fluorosurfactant used in some fluoropolymer output at its Spinetta Marengo site in Italy, the company said. The move fulfils a 2022 pledge to phase out fluorosurfactants by 2026 after research since 2019 enabled a new polymerisation process, B2B Marketplace reported on October 30, 2026.
Syensqo's Spinetta Marengo Phase-Out
Syensqo is a Belgian specialty chemicals and materials company that makes high-performance polymers for semiconductors, batteries, hydrogen and other industrial applications. Fluorosurfactants are manufacturing aids used in the production of certain fluoropolymers and have drawn regulatory and public attention within the broader PFAS discussion.
The company's research and innovation investment since 2019 produced a new polymerization process that does not require fluorosurfactants while maintaining the performance and reliability customers expect, according to the company. These non-fluorosurfactant technologies have since been rolled out across product lines, allowing Syensqo to cease C6O4 production in Italy.
"This milestone reflects years of investment in innovation," said Mike Radossich, CEO of Syensqo. "We have developed manufacturing technologies that eliminate the need for fluorosurfactants while continuing to provide the high-performance fluoropolymers our customers rely on for critical applications including semiconductors, clean energy and healthcare."
Nearly 100% of the company's fluoropolymers are now manufactured without these PFAS processing aids. A small number, approximately 1% of the site's production volume, of highly specialized fluoropolymers primarily supporting hydrogen and semiconductor applications still require additional research and qualification before transitioning to the new manufacturing technology. Existing C6O4 inventories will be used to manufacture these fluoropolymers using the best available technology for emissions reduction.
Earlier Syensqo Milestones
On October 8, 2026, Syensqo received UL Environmental Claim Validation for its circular Fomblin Y fluids, with about 40% of fluorine from post-industrial recycled hydrofluoric acid, Plastics Today reported. On October 15, Syensqo received a Raw Material supplier award from Avio at a supplier day in Italy, following a new long-term supply agreement announced in April 2026 covering ablative materials and resins for Avio's space and defense programs, Compositesworld reported. In September 2026, NOEMI Aerospace selected Syensqo's MTM 45-1 carbon fiber prepreg and AeroPaste structural adhesive for its all-electric amphibious aircraft, Aerospacemanufacturinganddesign reported.
Syensqo's Next Steps
Syensqo published its 2027 financial calendar on October 29, 2026, listing key dates for full-year and quarterly results, the ordinary shareholders' meeting, and half-year results, GlobeNewswire reported. The company said the remaining specialized fluoropolymers require additional research and qualification before transitioning to the new manufacturing technology.
