State Street Investment Management launched SPYMX, an institutional mutual fund share class of its SPDR Portfolio S&P 500 ETF (SPYM), on October 30, 2026. The firm announced that the new class carries no investment minimum for eligible retirement plans.
How the SPYMX Share Class Works
SPYMX is available to eligible employer-sponsored and state-sponsored retirement plans, including 401(k) and 403(b) plans, as well as other eligible institutional investors. The share class offers the same underlying exposure as the SPYM ETF through a shared portfolio structure, giving investors access to the ETF's scale and liquidity inside a '40 Act mutual fund.
State Street said US large-cap exposure typically ranks among the largest holdings in defined contribution plans, accounting for 30% of plan assets nationwide and totaling more than $4 trillion, half of which sits in mutual funds. The firm said the structure aligns with retirement plan platforms and recordkeeping systems.
"Retirement investors shouldn't have to choose between the operational familiarity of a mutual fund and the scale and efficiency associated with an ETF," said Anna Paglia, Chief Business Officer at State Street Investment Management. "This structure removes a longstanding vehicle constraint and represents an important step in our commitment to bring the benefits of ETF innovation to defined contribution savers."
SPYM has over $170 billion in assets under management and was recently selected as the default investment option for the Trump Accounts program. State Street traces its S&P 500 investing to the 1993 launch of SPY, the first US-listed ETF, and SPYM has tracked the index since 2020.
