Mitti Labs to Supply Salesforce 500,000 Rice Methane Credits by 2030

By ·

Key takeaways

  • Salesforce will purchase 500,000 methane reduction credits from Mitti Labs by 2030 under a five-year offtake agreement.
  • Alternate irrigation can cut methane emissions by up to 50% and water use by up to 40% without affecting yields.
  • Mitti Labs plans to issue 2 million credits per year by 2028 from projects in India and Southeast Asia.
  • The partnership is projected to save 700 billion liters of water.

Mitti Labs announced a five-year carbon credit offtake agreement under which Salesforce will purchase 500,000 methane reduction credits by 2030, scaling climate-smart rice farming across tens of thousands of smallholder farms in India. The companies announced the deal on October 28, 2026, according to PR Newswire.

How Mitti Labs' Rice Credits Work

Climate-smart rice farming replaces continuous irrigation with alternate irrigation, letting fields dry out during safe windows in the growing cycle. The practice can cut methane emissions by up to 50% and water usage by up to 40% without affecting yields, according to the company. Mitti Labs said agriculture accounts for 40% of all human-induced methane emissions.

Each credit delivered under the agreement is backed by field-level evidence and satellite-verified field dry-downs. Mitti Labs' GeoAI platform, developed with support from NASA, combines high-resolution satellite radar with ground truth to track flooding, soil moisture and crop health across individual smallholder plots. The company said the partnership is projected to save 700 billion liters of water, or roughly eighteen months of Bengaluru's annual supply.

Salesforce is a founding member of the Beyond Alliance's Superpollutant Action Initiative. "We know that superpollutant reduction is one of the best ways to slow near-term warming, and we are committed to directing capital toward high-impact mitigation efforts," said Jamila Yamani, PhD., Director of Climate & Energy at Salesforce. "Reducing methane emissions from rice farming is a scalable climate solution that also helps preserve water resources for future generations."

Xavier Laguarta, co-founder at Mitti Labs, said carbon credit buyers increasingly ask how they can see a project's impact for themselves. "Having Salesforce join Google in backing rice methane reductions shows that high-integrity, data-verified agricultural credits are becoming a core part of serious climate offsetting strategies," he said. Mitti Labs said its programs have saved 500 billion liters of water to date and that it received an 'A' rating from Sylvera in July 2026.

Jain Irrigation and Gevo Credit Deals

Jain Irrigation Systems signed a deal with Supercritical for up to 19,000 tonnes of biochar credits for 2026-27 from its Jalgaon facility, ScanX reported on October 28, 2026. Verification is underway through Puro.earth with a BeZero Carbon rating pending.

Gevo announced a three-year agreement with CEEZER to sell durable carbon dioxide removal credits from its North Dakota BECCS ethanol plant, Stock Titan reported on October 14, 2026. The deal covers a five-figure volume of tons through 2029.

Mitti Labs' 2028 Credit Target

Mitti Labs plans to issue 2 million credits per year by 2028 from projects in India and Southeast Asia. The company said it will deepen engagement with rice farming communities and expand its 'digital twins' GeoAI datasets over the five-year partnership. Mitti Labs was founded in 2023 and has 150 employees, according to its website.
