Hammons Products has extended its annual Black Walnut Harvest through November 30 and raised its buying price to $16 per 100 pounds of hulled nuts, [Yahoo](https://www.yahoo.com/news/articles/hammons-extends-black-walnut-harvest-094811343.html) reported. The Stockton, Missouri-based company said most of its network of about 170 hulling sites in 12 states will continue buying through November 30. ## Hammons Products Extends Harvest and Raises Buying Price The extension follows above-normal temperatures and a lack of rain that delayed the fall of wild black walnuts in recent weeks, according to a community announcement. Hammons Products said there is no minimum amount required, with hulling sites accepting anything from a bucket of nuts to a trailer load. Brian Hammons, CEO of Hammons Products, said the harvest had been slow because many nuts remained on trees longer than usual. "Now, with shorter days and cooler air, the wild Black Walnuts are finally falling and local people have 'money on the ground' — literally," Hammons said in the announcement. The black walnut crop appears to be decent across much of Missouri, according to the announcement, and the company expects harvest activity to increase as more nuts fall. "We hope and pray that the weather cooperates so folks can get them in. There's still time through the next 3-4 weeks, and a lot of people who love the 'Bold Taste of the Ozarks' in local Black Walnuts are counting on the harvest coming in," Hammons Products president Jacob Basecke said in the announcement. Basecke described the harvest as part of the region's heritage. "The Midwest is the only place in the world where Black Walnuts are collected and sold, so it's something that is very unique and special to these rural communities. Truly part of our Ozarks heritage," Basecke said. Harvesters are encouraged to gather wild black walnuts while they are still green rather than waiting until they are black, mushy or dried. Nuts should be taken to a hulling station within one to two days of collection to help preserve weight and quality, according to the announcement.
