A federal judge in Pittsburgh permanently barred Bundy Baking Solutions and its affiliate Synova from selling any product derived from Mallet & Company's trade secrets, or any product with a substantially similar formula to Mallet's baking release agents. ## What Chief Judge Bissoon's Injunction Requires

Chief Judge Cathy Bissoon of the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Pennsylvania ordered [Bundy Baking Solutions](https://akta.pro/company-profiles/000wkjc/bundy-baking-solutions) and [Synova](https://akta.pro/company-profiles/00yngok/synova-a-bundy-baking-solution) to turn over to [Mallet and Company](https://akta.pro/company-profiles/0008rjj/mallet-and-company) and then destroy all copies of information referencing the stolen trade secrets. For four years, Mallet may audit batch records for any Synova product with a substantially similar formula, along with Bundy's databases, document management systems, computers, servers, email and other devices.

Bundy must also give Mallet seven days' notice before interviewing any current or former Mallet employee bound by a noncompete agreement. The order follows an April 2025 jury verdict that Bundy and Synova misappropriated formulas for Mallet's release agents, which help remove baked goods from pans, molds, trays, conveyor belts and packaging.

"Misappropriation of intellectual property should never be rewarded, and this order will help ensure Bundy Baking and Synova cannot benefit from their brazen theft of our trade secrets," said Jan Tinge, Vantage's Executive Vice President, Foods. Mallet is a division of Vantage Group. Trial evidence showed Synova's CEO created a fictitious email address under the name "John Smith" to exchange emails with a former Mallet employee. Chief Judge Bissoon noted the jury found the conduct "willful and malicious" and awarded punitive damages on every available claim. Bundy has appealed the verdict.

## Mallet's Trade Secret Case in Company Records

According to akta.pro [company records](https://akta.pro/company-data), the April 2025 jury found Bundy and Synova willfully and maliciously misappropriated 11 of Mallet's trade secrets related to baking release agent formulas. The same records put total damages, attorneys' fees and costs awarded against the two companies at $19.26 million. Mallet, founded in 1939 and based in Carnegie, Pennsylvania, develops proprietary release agent formulations and Mallet* spray equipment for industrial bakeries.

## Other Trade Secret Fights in Court

[9to5Mac](https://9to5mac.com/2026/10/27/apple-wins-expanded-access-to-evidence-in-openai-trade-secrets-lawsuit/) reported that Judge Edward Davila granted Apple's expedited discovery requests in its trade secrets lawsuit against two former employees, OpenAI and io Products on October 28, 2026, giving the defendants 14 days to produce records. [Law360](https://www.law360.com/ip/articles/2542295?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=section) reported that Hewlett Packard Enterprise filed a Colorado federal court suit on October 26, 2026 against an executive on administrative leave over an AI tool's trade secrets.

## Bundy's Appeal and Court Oversight

Bundy Baking has been ordered to pay more than $20 million in damages, fees and costs. In January 2026, Bundy and Synova were sanctioned for what the court called "indefensible" post-trial conduct, the wrongful disclosure of Mallet's trade secrets in a court filing. The trial court said it will retain jurisdiction to enforce the injunction while Bundy's appeal proceeds.
