[The Hindu](https://www.thehindu.com/business/Industry/vultr-launches-20-mw-ai-supercluster-in-chennai-aims-1-gw-capacity-by-2029/article71656654.ece) reported that the facility is among Vultr's two largest AMD AI deployments globally, alongside its Springfield, Ohio site.\n\n## Inside Vultr's Chennai Supercluster\n\nThe facility is designed for large language model and foundation model training, fine-tuning and high-throughput inference, and will serve AI labs, startups, enterprises, research institutions and universities. It uses AMD's ROCm open software ecosystem, giving developers access to AI frameworks, libraries and models. Vultr plans to expand capacity in 2027 with AMD's MI455X GPUs and Helios rack-scale AI architecture.\n\nAmit Rai, Vultr's General Manager for AI and Enterprise Cloud, set out the capacity goal: \"I would be disappointed if we don't have 600 megawatt live by 2028, and then get into gigawatt by 2029.\" Chief Marketing Officer Kevin Cochrane told The Hindu that global enterprises had already pre-reserved a substantial portion of the Chennai facility's capacity, without disclosing their identities or the quantum booked. \"We do have some global enterprises that have pre-reserved a lot of the capacity that won't be sold through to digital startups and made available to universities here,\" he said.\n\nCochrane said the Tamil Nadu government had enabled 150 MW of connected power at the location, of which 20 MW was available for the initial deployment. Vultr is collaborating with server supplier [Supermicro](https://akta.pro/company-profiles/00007cj/supermicro) on energy-efficient racks. Supermicro is scaling into the AI infrastructure boom with record orders and new opportunities in liquid cooling and rack-scale systems, according to The Motley Fool.\n\n## Vultr's Funding and Global Footprint\n\nVultr reached a $3.5 billion valuation following a $333 million funding round in December 2024 led by LuminArx Capital Management and AMD Ventures, according to akta.pro [company records](https://akta.pro/company-data). The same records show total funding of $662 million and three funding rounds, including a $329 million debt round in June 2025 led by Bank of America, JPMorganChase and Wells Fargo. Vultr is reportedly seeking to raise at least $1 billion in new capital to expand AI computing capacity, working with Goldman Sachs.\n\n## Earlier Vultr AI Buildouts\n\nIn September 2026, Vultr announced a 50MW GPU cluster at its Springfield, Ohio data center, adding 24,000 AMD MI355X GPUs, Datacenterdynamics reported. That month, Hewlett Packard Enterprise won a $1.2 billion order from Vultr to supply AMD Helios AI racks with HPE networking gear for its US data centers, Bloomberg reported. In October 2026, Vultr announced the Chennai supercluster as the country's largest AMD AI deployment, supporting AI training, fine-tuning and inference for enterprises and research institutions, according to Business Wire Blog.\n\n## Vultr's India Hiring Plans\n\nVultr has hired more than 100 people in India over the past three months and plans thousands of additional hires in network engineering and operations by March. Its Chennai workforce could eventually reach 5,000 as the facility becomes operational and services expand.\n","publisher":{"name":"News for Agent","url":"https://newsforagent.com"}}
