TELUS and Métallos Local 1944 Reach Deal
TELUS is a Vancouver-based Canadian telecommunications company providing wireless, internet, IPTV and home phone services nationally, with AI infrastructure, digital customer experience and healthcare technology operations. The new contract was negotiated five months before the current collective agreement was due to expire in March, according to the release.
The bargaining committees reached a tentative agreement on October 20, and details were sent to members ahead of a series of virtual ratification meetings held in recent days. Members of Syndicat des Métallos Local 1944 include call-centre and technical support employees as well as technicians who maintain cellular infrastructure and serve residential and business customers in British Columbia, Alberta, Ontario and Quebec.
Michael Phillips, president of Local 1944, said the contract addresses members' priorities. "Our members told us their priorities were first and foremost the stability and security of their jobs," he said. "That is exactly what our bargaining committee focused on, and we succeeded, as the ratification vote shows."
Jayson Little, a union representative, said a productive negotiating climate took hold from the start of talks. "Both parties adopted a respectful and professional approach throughout the process, which allowed us to reach our objectives," he said.
The agreement also provides stability in pension and benefit plans, job protection in the event of reassignment, new limits on GPS monitoring of workers and new commitments on the relocation of operations.
