Slate Auto is preparing to release its $24,950 electric truck to customers by the end of 2026, after raising around $1.4 billion. Yahoo reported the timeline and took a short drive in a prototype across Manhattan.

Slate's $24,950 Truck Nears Customer Release

Slate, formed in 2022, moved from stealth mode to a public reveal in April of last year. The company aims to be cash-flow positive shortly after production begins, mainly because its parts are made in America except items such as tires, and because vehicle parts are not stamped on expensive presses. Exterior panels are composite pieces that avoid President Trump's tariffs on steel and aluminum.

Investors have included General Catalyst, Jeff Bezos and his family office, VC firm Slauson & Co., TWG, and former Amazon executive Diego Piacentini. The prototype Yahoo drove looked close to the production version apart from a camouflage wrap, with composite panels that can be removed and replaced if damaged, all in one slate gray color. The interior panels, dashboard and seat covers were still prototype spec. The vehicle had the footprint of a Ford Bronco, with a decent-size bed and usable trunk space if buyers opt for the SUV conversion.

"The vehicle was well-damped and comfortable over the cracked roads and potholes of NYC," Yahoo reported of the drive, adding that the truck drove like a car worth double the money, with smooth acceleration and decent vehicle dynamics given its low center of gravity.

Slate Auto's Funding and Preorder Figures

According to akta.pro company records, Slate closed a $650 million Series C round led by TWG Global in April 2026, bringing total capital raised to approximately $1.4 billion across three rounds to fund production and the Warsaw, Indiana factory buildout. The same records show Slate officially revealed pricing and opened preorders for the Blank Slate Truck at a $24,950 base MSRP on June 24, 2026, with first deliveries targeted for Q4 2026. The Squareback SUV is priced at $29,950 and the Fastback SUV at $31,950.

Earlier Slate Truck Reviews and Supplier Deals

InsideEVs reported in October 2026 that James May reviewed Slate Auto's electric pickup truck, calling it easier to live with than his Tesla, with the two-seat, rear-wheel-drive truck starting at $24,950 with a 205-mile range and customizable conversion kits. PR Newswire reported in October 2026 that Kenda Tire was selected as the original equipment supplier for the Blank Slate, providing its KLEVER S/T EV tire. Engadget reported in October 2026 that Slate is partnering with Smarties to offer six pastel-colored wraps for its EV trucks, named after candy flavors, that can be added as an option before delivery.

Slate's December Delivery Target

InsideEVs reported that Slate is expected to begin deliveries in December. PR Newswire reported that first deliveries are expected in Q4 2026, with preorders at $300.
