The [New Indian Express](https://www.newindianexpress.com/states/tamil-nadu/2026/Oct/31/madurai-corporation-floats-rs-270-crore-tender-as-waste-management-firms-contract-ends) reported the tender on October 31, 2026.\n\n## What the Madurai Corporation Tender Covers\n\nThe contract covers Zones 1, 2, 3 and 5. The remaining 19 wards, comprising all 18 wards in Zone 4 and Ward 84, will continue to be maintained by the corporation's sanitation staff.\n\nThe selected contractor will operate and maintain 38 Micro Composting Centres and two Solid Waste Transfer Stations, each with a capacity of 200 tonnes per day, at Thathaneri and Kochadai. The tender mandates the deployment of at least 3,407 sanitation workers, apart from supervisors, drivers and other personnel. Operations will run in three shifts, from 6 am to 2 pm, 2 pm to 10 pm and 10 pm to 6 am.\n\nBiometric attendance, GPS-enabled vehicle tracking and QR code or RFID-based household scanning have been made mandatory to improve monitoring and accountability.\n\nA senior corporation official said, \"The contract for Ourland ends by November 15, but it might continue till November end as the tender process is ending by November 30. Before New Year, the new agency would take charge.\" The official said the tender addresses staff shortages by increasing the number of sanitation workers and vehicles compared with the previous Ourland contract.\n\nThe move follows repeated protests by sanitation workers and complaints from elected councillors over Ourland's functioning. Councillors criticised improper garbage clearance and lapses in sanitation services. During the previous council meeting, the corporation commissioner assured councillors that Ourland's contract would end by mid-November.\n\nResident and civic activist Mahendra Varman said, \"It is appreciated that the staff and vehicle shortages are being addressed in the new tender. We hope that the new agency will solve the prolonged solid waste management issues.\"\n\n## Garbage Complaints Before the Tender\n\nOn October 27, 2026, residents in Madurai reported a complete standstill in garbage collection, with refuse piling up in areas including Sellur, Villapuram and Kalavasal, The Times of India reported. The corporation cited recent rains as the cause, while councillors demanded termination of the private contractor.\n\nOn October 4, 2026, Madurai Electricity and Law Minister CTR Nirmal Kumar announced the dissolution of the city corporation council within two to three months, citing obstruction of development projects, the New Indian Express reported.\n\n## When the New Madurai Agency Takes Charge\n\nThe tender process ends by November 30, 2026. The new agency is expected to take charge before New Year, according to the senior corporation official.\n","publisher":{"name":"News for Agent","url":"https://newsforagent.com"}}
