The Lagos State Consumer Protection Agency secured N26.24m in refunds and credit adjustments for electricity consumers after complaints against Ikeja Electric Distribution Company between January and September 2026, Punch Newspapers reported. The agency resolved 528 of the 556 complaints it received against the distributor in the nine months.

How LASCOPA Resolved the Ikeja Electric Complaints

LASCOPA reviewed complaints submitted through online and offline channels and convened meetings between Ikeja Electric officials and affected consumers, according to the statement seen by Punch. The agency left 28 complaints unresolved, a resolution rate of about 95 per cent.

Yusuf Musiliu, LASCOPA's Head of Complaints and Mediation, said the monthly stakeholders' parley gave consumers a platform to present grievances, engage the distributor and reach mutually acceptable agreements. "I urged aggrieved consumers to pursue formal channels rather than resort to self-help," Musiliu said, advising them to provide electricity bills and payment receipts to aid investigations.

Afolabi Solebo, LASCOPA's General Manager and Chief Executive Officer, reaffirmed the agency's commitment to consumer protection, transparency and accountability in electricity distribution. The agency said its interventions fall under its mandate in the Lagos State Consumer Protection Law 2025, as amended.

Ikeja Electric's Record on Customer Refunds

Ikeja Electric is Nigeria's largest power distribution network, serving the entire Lagos franchise area including Ikeja, Lagos Island and Lagos Mainland, according to akta.pro company records. The same records show Ikeja Electric led with N20.95 billion in refunds to 300,079 customers for overbilling violations in 2024.

In December 2025, the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission sealed Ikeja Electric's Lagos headquarters over consumer rights violations, later unsealing it after the company signed compliance undertakings covering customer account unbundling and complaint resolution, the records show.

Earlier Complaints Against the Distributor

In July 2026, a resident of Bucknor Estate in Lagos, Oluwayemi Afuape, accused Ikeja Electric of unlawfully disconnecting his electricity supply and threatening him during the process, Premium Times Nigeria reported. Afuape said he was not given prior notice of his Band A classification status despite having no evidence of meter tampering.

Ikeja Electric appointed Ogochukwu Onyelucheya as Acting Chief Executive Officer effective July 1, 2026, Punch Newspapers reported, following Folake Soetan's transition to a broader strategic role across Sahara's power and upstream businesses.

When Ikeja Electric Customers Can Escalate

LASCOPA said its stakeholders' meeting with Ikeja Electric holds on the last Thursday of every month, offering consumers an avenue to escalate unresolved complaints. Consumers can also report disputes through the agency's toll-free helpline on weekdays or by email.
