Whole Foods Market Leases 10,000-Square-Foot Logan Square Store in Former Family Dollar

Whole Foods Market signed a lease for a 10,000-square-foot building at 2280 N. Milwaukee Ave. in Chicago's Logan Square, a former Family Dollar store, the company's spokesperson said. Yahoo reported the lease, which Crain's Chicago Business first covered. No opening date was disclosed.

Inside the Logan Square Small-Store Lease

The site sits near the CTA Blue Line's California Avenue stop. The spokesperson said no additional details were available, including a possible opening date. The small-store format is part of a national strategy to bring Whole Foods Market into new neighborhoods, according to a company news release. The Austin-based grocer has already opened several small stores, including in New York City and Virginia, and signed leases for several more, including one in the landmark Home Bank and Trust Company Building at 1200 N. Ashland Ave. in Wicker Park.

Amazon purchased Whole Foods Market in 2017. Whole Foods Market already has nearly a dozen Chicago locations and a big presence on the North Side. Its flagship store at 1550 N. Kingsbury St. in Lincoln Park totals about 80,000 square feet. The grocer also recently announced plans to open in the former Treasure Island supermarket at 1639 N. Wells St. in Old Town.

The switch at 2280 N. Milwaukee Ave. may illustrate a shift in Logan Square's demographics. Luxury apartment towers such as MiCA Apartments and L Logan Square Apartments now line Milwaukee Avenue, and new retailers are moving in to serve recently arrived residents. Family Dollar, which shuttered in 2023, provided the neighborhood with low-cost goods, while Whole Foods Market is best known as a high-end grocer specializing in natural and organic foods. A grocery store is a welcome addition to Logan Square, according to a spokesperson for Ald. Daniel La Spata, 1st. The alderman's office has heard from neighbors for years about the need for grocery stores near this L stop, the spokesperson said.

Whole Foods Market's Store Footprint

Whole Foods Market operates more than 550 locations across the U.S., Canada and the U.K., with 100 more stores planned, according to akta.pro company records. The same records list 533 U.S. stores, including 38 in Florida. Amazon CEO Andy Jassy stated the grocery business reached $150 billion in gross sales.

Whole Foods Market will open a 37,636-square-foot store in Midlothian, Va., on Nov. 19, its third in the Greater Richmond Region and 17th in Virginia, Wric reported in October 2026. A new 40,000-square-foot store in West Chester, Ohio, is set to open November 18, 2026, at 9:00 a.m., a relocation of the Mason location, WebWire reported. Angry Angel Energy + Focus is expanding to Whole Foods Market's 500-plus-store footprint by November, PR Newswire reported.

Whole Foods Market's Dated Openings

Whole Foods Market will open a 40,000-square-foot store in Eatontown, New Jersey, on July 29, 2026, at Monmouth Square, according to company records. A 34,900-square-foot store at 22R Via Toscana in Salem, New Hampshire, opens July 22, 2026, the first in Salem and the fifth in the state. A 43,000-square-foot store at 10700 NW 41st St. in Doral, Florida, opens July 2, 2026.
