## How the Kindness Closet Grant Works

Anne Mautner, founder of [The Kindness Closet](https://akta.pro/company-profiles/02ifszp/the-kindness-closet), traced the organization's origins to a story she heard years ago. "Years ago, I heard about two brothers sharing a toothbrush here in Mooresville. And I just found that completely unacceptable that that is happening here," Mautner said.

The nonprofit started in 2018 with a small cabinet in a downtown Mooresville park. Mautner said the original warehouse measured 900 square feet and the new space reaches 3,500 square feet. "So it's just a game changer for us," she said.

New shelving, packing stations and a more efficient warehouse layout support the nearly 30% increase in distribution capacity. Mautner said the organization is growing as fast as it can because the need is so great.

James Garst, manager of the Lowe's store in Mooresville, described the grant as part of the retailer's community work. "The fact that we can step outside of our store and we can be a part of our community and impact organizations that are giving back every day is the reason we do what we do," Garst said.

Darcy Ridge, board chair of The Kindness Closet, said serving neighbors makes the community a better place to live. The project is one of six Lowe's-funded community improvements across the Charlotte area this fall.
