The exchange has arranged an invitation-only, in-person industry roundtable in early November to discuss the initiative.\n\n## How the LME Tokenization Would Work\n\nThe [London Metal Exchange](https://akta.pro/company-profiles/0003m61/london-metal-exchange) said it is at the early stages of exploring the tokenisation of off-warrant metal inventories to support financing of business. \"We will be engaging with stakeholders as we formulate our plans,\" the exchange said in response to a request for comment sent to the LME and [Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing](https://www.hkex.com.hk).\n\nMetal on warrant, already backed by title documents that allow it to be traded or used as loan collateral, cannot be included in the initiative. Off-warrant stocks currently lack a standardised mechanism for financing. Tokenisation would create digital assets for metal held in the exchange's warehouses that can be used as collateral for loans, for example.\n\nLME CEO Matt Chamberlain mentioned tokenisation in a speech at LME Week Asia in May. The 149-year-old exchange has required its warehouses to report off-warrant stocks since 2020, saying at the time the aim was to give the market transparency and a fuller picture of available supply of industrial metals including copper and aluminium.\n\nHong Kong's policy initiative has its roots in Beijing. China's 15th five-year plan, published in March, for the first time explicitly backs the development of a commodity trading powerhouse in Hong Kong. \"We will leverage Hong Kong's unique advantages as an approved delivery point within the London Metal Exchange's global warehousing network to drive the synergised development of more commodities-related trading, risk management, and financing businesses,\" Hong Kong said in its plan.\n\nThe LME approved Hong Kong as a warehouse location in January last year despite metal industry concerns about rent being significantly higher than in other parts of Asia. It is also looking at relaxing its rules for Hong Kong to allow aluminium to be stored outside, a practice it experimented with briefly in the 1990s before ending it over concerns about weather damage and security.\n\n## Hong Kong's Earlier Tokenization Steps\n\nHong Kong's tokenization is moving from experimentation to implementation, with over 1,400 fintech companies including 8 virtual banks and 12 licensed virtual asset trading platforms, Xu Zhengyu said, ChainCatcher reported in October 2026. Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing's Core Climate platform now lets 15 firms trade Green Electricity Certificates via Guangzhou Power Exchange, the South China Morning Post reported in October 2026. Hong Kong will launch an index for offshore yuan bonds, managed by Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing, Chief Executive John Lee said, Bloomberg reported in September 2026.\n\n## Gold and Crude Tokens Elsewhere\n\nGoldZip, operating through entities associated with Hong Kong Gold Exchange, integrated Chainlink's CCIP for its gold-backed XGZ token, which represents one gram of gold and has a market cap of about $5 million, [Crypto Briefing](https://cryptobriefing.com/hong-kong-gold-exchange-xgz-chainlink-ccip/) reported on October 27, 2026. Energy Substantiation listed its WTIC token on LMAX Digital, enabling institutional spot trading, with each WTIC representing one barrel of WTI crude backed 1:1 by verified physical inventory, [PR Newswire](https://www.prnewswire.com/news-releases/energy-substantiation-brings-physically-backed-crude-oil-to-institutional-markets-with-wtic-listing-on-lmax-digital-302910638.html) reported on October 15, 2026.\n\n## LME's Options Trading Date\n\nThe LME announced that electronic options trading will begin on its LMEselect v10 platform starting March 30, 2027, with a market test environment available from October 19, 2026, Investing.com reported in September 2026.\n","publisher":{"name":"News for Agent","url":"https://newsforagent.com"}}
