Jain Irrigation to Supply Supercritical Up to 19,000 Tonnes of Biochar Credits

By ·

Key takeaways

  • Jain Irrigation Systems signed an agreement with Supercritical for up to 19,000 tonnes of biochar carbon removal credits for 2026 and 2027.
  • The credits come from Jain's industrial biochar facility in Jalgaon, Maharashtra, which began production in early 2026.
  • Supercritical's H2 2026 biochar market report found 81% of high-quality 2026 biochar supply was committed by July, three months earlier than in 2025.

Jain Irrigation Systems Ltd. has entered into an agreement with carbon removal marketplace Supercritical to supply up to 19,000 tonnes of biochar carbon removal credits for 2026 and 2027. ScanX reported the deal on October 28, 2026, citing a company press release.

How Jain's Jalgaon Biochar Facility Works

The credits are generated at Jain Irrigation Systems' industrial biochar facility in Jalgaon, Maharashtra, which began production in early 2026. The plant converts agricultural and food processing residues into biochar through a gasification process, producing a stable form of carbon that remains locked in soil for centuries.

All outputs from the process are used within Jain's own operations. Syngas replaces fossil fuel at industrial sites, and biochar serves as a soil amendment for the company's downstream agriculture businesses. Supercritical noted that many biochar projects are building supply chains from scratch, while Jain draws on a network established over six decades. The company works with more than 10 million farmers and operates one of the world's largest mango processing operations, alongside tissue culture nurseries producing 150 million plants annually.

Steve Morrin, Supply Senior Manager at Supercritical, said the delivery profile is attractive because the feedstock comes from Jain's own operations and the farmer network already exists. Supercritical's H2 2026 biochar market report indicates that 81% of high-quality 2026 biochar supply was already committed by July, three months earlier than the same point in 2025. The project is undergoing verification through Puro.earth, with an independent BeZero Carbon rating underway.

Jain's Biochar Capacity and Partner Projects

According to akta.pro company records, Jain commissioned a 20,000-tonne-per-annum industrial-scale biochar facility in Jalgaon in June 2026, described as one of the world's largest single-unit biochar reactors, processing more than 50 tonnes per day of agricultural and fruit residue. The same records show a June 2026 partnership with Ankur Scientific for a biomass-to-bioenergy project in Jalgaon that converts 50 tonnes per day of agricultural residue into 90 MWh of thermal energy and 12 tonnes of biochar.

Debt Repayment and Board Meeting Before the Deal

On September 25, 2026, ScanX reported that Jain Irrigation Systems discharged ₹246.72 crore in debt obligations ahead of schedule, covering non-convertible debentures and term debt due up to September 30, 2026, funded from business cash flows and liquidity. On October 1, 2026, ScanX reported that Jain Irrigation Systems DVR held its first independent directors meeting for FY27 on September 30, 2026, via video conferencing, with the session excluding executive directors and management as required by regulatory norms.

Supercritical's India Biochar Expansion

On September 4, 2026, Carbon Herald reported that Supercritical and Ground Up agreed to expand biochar carbon removal across India, turning a Maharashtra pilot into a multi-site network targeting at least 50,000 tonnes by 2028.
