## Key takeaways

- ISRO is scheduled to launch NVS-03, its third new-generation navigation satellite, on October 30.
- NavIC currently has three operational satellites, IRNSS-1B, IRNSS-1I and NVS-01, against a minimum requirement of four.
- The second-generation satellites carry indigenously developed atomic clocks with a 12-year mission life and transmit an L1 signal alongside L5 and S.

ISRO is scheduled to launch NVS-03, its third new-generation navigation satellite, on October 30, aiming to restore positioning data from NavIC, India's regional satellite navigation system. [The Indian Express](https://indianexpress.com/article/explained/explained-sci-tech/navic-nvs-03-launch-isro-navigation-gps-system-10934129/) reported that the satellite is intended to bring the constellation to the minimum four operational satellites needed for standalone positioning.

## What the NVS-03 Launch Is Meant to Restore

NavIC, the operational name for the Indian Regional Navigation Satellite System, is a seven-satellite constellation covering the Indian subcontinent and a region up to 1,500 km around it. With all seven satellites functional, the system was designed to provide location accuracy up to 10 metres, open to the public, with a more accurate restrictive service available for a fee to select users such as large construction projects or the military. ISRO started work on NavIC in 1999 after the Kargil war, when Indian defence forces could not use the US-owned GPS system for locational aid in conflict zones.

The constellation has three satellites providing positioning, navigation and timing services, IRNSS-1B, IRNSS-1I and NVS-01, the Central government told Parliament, according to The Indian Express. ISRO has launched 11 navigation satellites since July 2013 for the nearly Rs 2,250-crore system, and six have failed, primarily because of defective imported atomic clocks and, on a few recent occasions, orbital issues. Two replacement satellites failed to reach orbit: IRNSS-1H could not be placed in orbit after the shield protecting it from atmospheric friction failed to open, and NVS-02's propulsion system failed to perform the manoeuvres needed to reach its final orbit.

A review committee found the main reason for the NVS-02 failure was a signal not reaching the pyro valve of the oxidiser line of the engine, most likely because at least one contact to the connector had disengaged. More thorough checks have since been conducted to ensure the propulsion system does not fail, according to persons familiar with the matter. The second-generation satellites, beginning with NVS-01, carry indigenously developed atomic clocks with a 12-year mission life and send signals in a third frequency, L1, besides L5 and S, improving interoperability with other positioning systems.

## ISRO's Recent Mission Activity

ISRO Chairman V Narayanan announced that the agency will showcase emerging technologies at ESTIC 2026 in New Delhi from October 27-29, Mint reported. ISRO announced that the SpaDex-A and SpaDex-B satellites re-entered Earth's atmosphere on October 12 and 13, 2026, ending the mission after nearly 22 months, The Times of India reported. ISRO completed Crew Module-Service Module separation tests for the Gaganyaan G1 mission, simulating the severing of umbilical connections and validating subsystems, The Hindu reported.

## Satellite Launches Elsewhere

FOSSA and IENAI Space launched the first Spanish satellite with 100% Spanish electric propulsion from Cabo Cañaveral, [Eleconomista](https://www.eleconomista.es/industria/noticias/14022268/10/26/fossa-e-ienai-ponen-en-orbita-el-primer-satelite-con-propulsion-100-espanola.html) reported. The satellite, FOSSA's 27th launch, carries the ATHENA NANO thruster, enabling collision avoidance and orbit maintenance, and marks the start of IENAI's commercialization phase for the thruster. AXISCADES Technologies incorporated Xponential Space Private Limited on October 16, 2026, as a wholly owned subsidiary for satellite design, manufacturing and space data analytics, [ScanX](https://scanx.trade/stock-market-news/companies/axiscades-technologies-launches-xponential-space-satellite-solutions/53752925) reported.
