Dollar General agreed to pay $1.875 million after New York investigators found it charged shoppers more at the register than the prices advertised on shelves, circulars and promotional signs, with overcharges on individual items reaching as high as 39%. Yahoo reported the settlement on October 24, 2026.
What New York Investigators Found at Dollar General
The New York Attorney General's Office found that Dollar General routinely billed higher prices at the register than those shown on shelf labels, weekly circulars and promotional signs. In spot-checks, overcharges on individual items climbed as high as 26%, 38% and 39%.
State investigators also found that Dollar General's register receipts used confusing formats, sometimes displaying only original prices, other times showing only final discounts, or omitting clear details entirely.
"When New Yorkers see a sale price advertised on the shelf, they should be able to trust that they'll be charged that same price at the register," New York attorney general Letitia James said in a statement.
Under the settlement, Dollar General must honor the lowest listed price instantly whenever shelf-to-register mismatches occur, redesign receipts so savings, discounts and final unit prices are clear, and bring in independent auditors to conduct routine secret-shopper compliance checks. The $1.875 million penalty will be paid as a donation of food and personal care items to Foodlink, a regional nonprofit helping families facing food insecurity. The company neither admitted nor denied the findings.
