[The Times of India](https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/nagpur/aiims-gets-rs-30cr-nod-for-biosafety-level-three-lab/articleshow/135176327.cms) reported the sanction on October 24, 2026.\n\n## What the BSL-III Laboratory Will Do\n\nAIIMS Nagpur is a Government of India Institute of National Importance established under PMSSY in 2018, operating a tertiary care hospital and medical college in Nagpur with 832 IPD beds and more than 40 specialty departments. The new laboratory is expected to become operational in about a year.\n\n\"Space had already been earmarked for the facility and the sanctioned amount would be used for developing its infrastructure,\" executive director Prashant Joshi said. Manpower and equipment would be funded through separate budgets.\n\nJoshi said the facility will reduce dependence on the National Institute of Virology in Pune for advanced testing and help strengthen Maharashtra's capacity for infectious disease surveillance and research. He said increasing human-animal interaction, deforestation and climate change are creating conditions for the emergence and spread of zoonotic infections.\n\n\"Human-animal interface is increasing because of deforestation. We are invading the habitat of animals. Climate change and deforestation are very important factors,\" Joshi said.\n\nMeena Mishra, head of the department of microbiology at AIIMS Nagpur, said early detection of emerging infections requires both syndromic and genomic surveillance. Syndromic surveillance identifies unusual patterns of illness based on symptoms, while genomic surveillance detects mutations and emerging pathogens through whole genome sequencing.\n\n\"If the incidence of a disease is increasing, it should be picked up through proper syndromic surveillance as well as genomics at an early stage so that proper preventive measures can be implemented,\" Mishra said.\n\n## The ₹17 Crore Diagnostic Laboratory Upgrade\n\nAIIMS Nagpur's Virus Research and Diagnostic Laboratory is being converted into an Infectious Disease Research and Diagnostic Laboratory at a cost of ₹17 crore, funded by ICMR-DHR. The upgraded regional facility will cover bacteriology, mycology, parasitology and virology, besides expanding the range of infections that can be tested, and is expected to become functional within three months.\n\nMishra said the microbiology department was already involved in national surveillance programmes and had contributed to granting PCR-testing status to more than 250 laboratories.\n\n## AIIMS Nagpur's Recent Expansion\n\nAccording to akta.pro [company records](https://akta.pro/company-data), AIIMS Nagpur launched an advanced HELA radiotherapy machine in May 2025, expanding precision radiation oncology capabilities including EBRT, IMRT, IGRT, VMAT, SRS, SBRT and Brachytherapy. The institute launched Ayush OPD services in March 2024, integrating Ayurveda, Panchakarma and Yogic procedures into its tertiary care offering. Dr. (Prof) Prashant P. Joshi was appointed Executive Director and CEO in February 2024, succeeding prior leadership as a 40-year teaching veteran and clinical epidemiologist.\n\n## Earlier Developments at the Institute\n\nIn July 2026, AIIMS Nagpur signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Sevadaan Aarogya Foundation to establish an 800-bed Vishram Gruh within its campus, providing affordable accommodation for relatives and attendants of patients, [Medical Buyer](https://akta.pro/news-signals) reported. In September 2026, Sonegaon police registered an FIR against four relatives of a 66-year-old patient after a resident doctor at AIIMS Nagpur was verbally abused and assaulted in the ICU, The Times of India reported. In October 2026, three AIIMS Nagpur faculty members were featured in the World's Top 2% Scientists List 2026, compiled from Scopus data, Medical Buyer reported.\n\nThe IRDL upgrade is expected to become functional within three months, while the BSL-III laboratory is expected to become operational in about a year.\n","publisher":{"name":"News for Agent","url":"https://newsforagent.com"}}
