Tata Motors' managing director and chief executive Girish Wagh said the company is confident of managing India's Bharat Stage VII emission transition, as the government's initial schedule puts the first phase for light commercial vehicles in April 2030. Tata Motors' Read On The BS7 Schedule
India's initial schedule introduces BS7 in three phases. For light commercial vehicles in the N1 and N2 categories, Phase 1 takes effect in April 2030, Phase 2 in April 2032 and Phase 3 in April 2035. For heavy commercial vehicles exceeding 3.5 tonnes, Phase 1 begins in April 2031, Phase 2 in April 2033 and Phase 3 in April 2035.
Wagh said the dates mark the start of a structured, consultative dialogue between the Ministry of Road Transport and automotive stakeholders. Additional industry meetings will evaluate supply chain bottlenecks and timeline feasibility before the government issues final notifications.
"I am quite confident that the way the industry was able to manage the BS4 to BS6 transition, and when I say industry, I am including not just the OEMs, but also the supplier ecosystem, similar will be the capability for BS7," Wagh said.
Commercial vehicle operators also face safety mandates, including Advanced Driver Assistance Systems such as advanced emergency braking systems for buses starting in late 2028. Wagh said hardware development will increase vehicle prices, and that Tata Motors is structuring its product roadmap to deliver compensating operational value.
"There will be a cost increase... but as in the past with any regulatory change and regulatory intervention, we have been trying to see how we can provide some value enhancement to the customers so that the cost increase for them does not just become pure cost increase," Wagh said.
