Seatrium Limited and Karpowership signed a contract for the development, major conversion and integration of five third-generation hydrogen-ready Whale Class Powerships, with engineering activities underway and the first vessel targeted for arrival at Seatrium's Tuas Boulevard Yard in December 2027. PR Newswire carried the announcement on October 23, 2026.
Seatrium's Scope on the Whale Class Powerships
Seatrium's work covers equipment integration, mechanical completion and pre-commissioning, and both parties are working to advance the project's execution phase progressively. Powerships are floating power plants with hydrogen-ready multi-fuel generation systems and integrated onboard substations that connect directly to national electricity grids. Karpowership's plug-and-play design lets them begin generating electricity in as little as 30 days, and the Whale Class is engineered to deploy up to 600 MW of immediate, grid-ready power.
Alvin Gan, Executive Vice President, Repairs and Upgrades at Seatrium, said, "This significant milestone marks Seatrium's first major conversion work and integration of Karpowership's Whale Class Powerships."
Gokhan Kocak, Chief Technical Operations Officer at Karpowership, said, "We are pleased to build on our strong partnership with Seatrium, whose proven expertise in complex vessel integration make them an ideal partner."
The contract follows a Letter of Intent signed in August 2025, which had provided for three FSRU conversions and the potential integration of up to six new-generation Powerships. Seatrium has delivered seven FSRU conversion projects to Karpowership since 2018, with the eighth and ninth secured this year. Karpowership Ghana is seeking an extension of its power generation contract beyond August 2027, when its current licence expires, MyJoyOnline reported.
Seatrium's Order Book and Funding Records
Seatrium is a Singapore-based marine engineering firm, according to akta.pro company records, with an order book of S$15.5 billion across 24 projects as at Q1 ended March 31, 2026, and deliveries extending till 2033. The same records show FY2025 revenue of S$11.5 billion ($9.0 billion), up 24% year-over-year, and net profit more than doubled to S$324 million ($254 million). Seatrium priced S$400 million of fixed-rate notes at 2.95% due 2031 in April 2026 under a S$3 billion multicurrency debt issuance programme.
Earlier Seatrium and Karpowership Milestones
In September 2026, Seatrium and Karpowership named and sailed LNGT Türkiye, the seventh FSRU in their seven-vessel conversion programme, at Seatrium's Admiralty Yard, PR Newswire reported. The programme began in 2018 and converted seven LNG carriers into FSRUs to supply feed gas to Karpowership's Powership fleet. In August 2026, Petrobras and Seatrium launched the P-80 and P-82 floating production, storage and offloading units from Singapore to Brazil, according to InfoMoney.
