The San Diego Symphony will begin its Kids Series on October 24, offering 30-minute concerts designed for children 5 and under and open to all ages, with tickets starting at $24. The series was developed in 2024 with San Diego State University's Center for Autism and Developmental Disorders, according to Yahoo.

San Diego Symphony's Kids Series Concerts and Accommodations

The concerts are held in collaboration with San Diego State University's Center for Autism and Developmental Disorders to create an inclusive environment. Musicians dance onto the stage in colorful costumes, a contrast to traditional orchestra performances.

Laura Reynolds, the Symphony's vice president of impact and innovation, said inclusivity shaped the series from the start. "We knew when we started the series that we wanted it to be open and welcoming to all families," she said.

Inna Fishman, who directs the Center for Autism and Developmental Disorders, said the aim is to make music and arts accessible to everyone. "I've always believed that music and arts should be for everyone, right? Not just for adults who can sit still for an hour," she said.

The Symphony offers lower lighting, access to a quiet room and sensory kits that include noise-canceling headphones and fidget toys. SDSU students studying behavioral health assist as concert buddies, providing extra support during the shows by "taking one of several siblings to a quiet room, or maybe playing with another sibling," Fishman said.

The theater will not be filled to capacity, allowing children more space to move around freely. One hour before each show, families can participate in arts and crafts activities and hands-on instrument experiences in the lobby.

Reynolds and Fishman expressed gratitude for the positive feedback received from families. "It gives people a space where they can belong, where they can be themselves," Reynolds said.

Where and When the Kids Series Performs

The Kids Series will be held at the Jacobs Music Center at 1245 Seventh Avenue on selected Saturdays in October, December, February and April at 10 and 11:30 a.m. Tickets start at $24. The Symphony's own announcement directs families to the Kids Series section for more information.
