InScribe announced a partnership with Northern Illinois University to launch a digital community platform for its online students, with up to 2,000 students gaining access starting fall 2026. The platform will be integrated directly into Blackboard. PR Newswire published the announcement on October 23, 2026.
How the NIU and InScribe Platform Works
InScribe is a digital community platform built for colleges and universities to create community around online learning. The platform gives students a centralized space to ask questions, share knowledge and connect with peers, mentors and university staff. It is designed to meet students where they already are, rather than requiring them to adopt another tool or asking staff to manage additional channels.
NIU's Office of Online Learning brought online student support in-house in 2023, and the university has grown its fully online enrollment by roughly 7% every year since. A team of seven people runs prospective student support, orientation, newsletters, student advisory committees, retention campaigns, proactive outreach, webinars and one-on-one coaching. Engagement and belonging is one of six pillars in NIU's student success framework, alongside academics, inclusive excellence, care and support, financial literacy, and career development.
"Our goals for this year include finding apps and ways to help students connect and build community," said Anna Richardson, Director of Online and Adult Learning at NIU. "InScribe is a tool that can help us achieve this, and this partnership illustrates how NIU ties community and belonging to retention. We look forward to increased engagement and success for our students."
"NIU wrote engagement and belonging into their student success framework as a named priority, not an afterthought," said Katy Kappler, CEO of InScribe. "That's rare. It tells you they already know what we know: this isn't a nice-to-have, it's one of the few retention levers a university can actually control."
InScribe's Recent Partnerships and Funding

In March 2026, InScribe was selected to support a multi-institutional initiative with Alamo Colleges District, Rio Salado College and WCET aimed at improving online student belonging and persistence. In December 2025, InScribe received a grant from the Clayton Christensen Institute's Networked Guidance Pilot Fund to develop an AI-powered digital ecosystem for expanding student social capital.
