York and Scarborough Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust needs an estimated £736,000 to meet new national maternity and neonatal care requirements by March 2027, with delivery of the improvements currently at risk, health bosses have said. EIN Presswire reported the figure from the trust's board report.

York and Scarborough's Maternity Improvement Plan

NHS England introduced a Maternity and Neonatal 10 Point Plan alongside new requirements including the Maternal Care Bundle and maternity triage standards published for services across England in June this year. The requirements followed a series of national reviews into maternity and neonatal care across England.

The trust's board report states that compliance with some maternity triage standards currently stands at 58.7 per cent, with further work needed to meet the new national requirements. The report identifies workforce and financial pressures as key challenges, and states that full delivery of the improvements by March 2027 remains at risk.

Director of Midwifery Sascha Wells-Munro said: "Improving maternity and neonatal safety is a national priority, and all NHS trusts providing these services are being asked to implement further improvements following recent independent reviews of maternity care."

She told the Local Democracy Reporting Service: "The estimated £736,000 identified in our Board report reflects the additional investment we have assessed is needed to meet these national requirements."

Ms Wells-Munro said the trust has already been working to strengthen maternity triage and assessment across its hospital sites, alongside a continued focus on safe staffing. She pointed to recent Care Quality Commission inspections, which rated maternity services at both York and Scarborough hospitals as good across all areas assessed.

NHS England's Scale and Planned Restructuring

NHS England is a statutory public body that commissions and oversees NHS healthcare services for England's 55 million residents, operating the NHS App, Federated Data Platform, and a national network of trusts and GP practices, funded entirely through UK government taxation, according to akta.pro company records. The same records list a planned move in April 2027 under which the UK government announced the NHS Modernisation Bill to formally abolish NHS England and transfer its functions to the Department of Health and Social Care.

Earlier NHS England Developments

In October 2026, Health Secretary Yvette Cooper warned the NHS faces a more challenging winter than normal and announced a £140 million boost for urgent care in England, EIN Presswire reported. NHS England also reported 305,264 written complaints in 2025-26, an 18.9 per cent increase from the prior year, with 26.2 per cent upheld, according to EIN Presswire.

Next Steps for NHS England

The trust said it would continue working with women and families through its Maternity and Neonatal Voices Partnerships. Ms Wells-Munro said: "Our priority remains providing safe, compassionate and high-quality care for women, babies and families, and we are committed to meeting the national standards for the services we are commissioned to provide by our Integrated Care Board."
