The Australian Energy Market Operator assigned a 99MW reserve capacity credit to Stage One of Frontier Energy's Waroona renewable energy project in Western Australia, up from 88MW, lifting the annual reserve capacity payment to $36 million from about $32 million. TradingView reported the allocation on October 21, 2026.
AEMO Raises Waroona's Reserve Capacity Credit
Stage One will receive a fixed reserve capacity payment of $360,700 per megawatt per annum for each credit until September 30, 2032, after which the payment reverts to a floating price. Revenue from reserve capacity credits comes on top of energy sales.
Frontier Energy is a Western Australian renewable energy developer building the 120MW Waroona solar-plus-storage project for sale into the Wholesale Electricity Market, with commissioning targeted for October 2027. The Australian Energy Market Operator runs the reserve capacity mechanism, introduced in Western Australia in 2006 after blackouts in 2004, which certifies generation and storage facilities and pays them per megawatt of capacity available during peak periods. The credit increase reflects amendments to the state's Electricity System and Market Rules that lifted the contribution of Waroona's intermittent solar generation during high demand.
Frontier Energy executive chair Jamie Cullen said the increase would deliver a meaningful uplift in fixed price revenues. "This is an excellent outcome for Frontier and further strengthens the already robust commercial foundations of Stage One," he said.
Frontier Energy's Revised Stage One Forecasts
According to akta.pro company records, Frontier Energy has five funding rounds on record, including a July 2026 post-IPO debt round of $196 million and a June 2026 post-IPO equity round of $78.4 million. The same records list total funding of $423 million and a 120MW solar generation capacity for the Waroona project, which includes an 80MW/360MWh DC-coupled battery energy storage system.
Waroona Contracts and Financing Before the Credit
In September 2026, Trina Storage agreed to supply the battery energy storage system for Stage One, pairing a 132MW solar facility with an 81.5MW/562MWh BESS, Energy-Storage.News reported. Frontier Energy executed all major equipment and construction contracts for Stage One ahead of September construction, Proactiveinvestors reported that month. In July 2026, PV Tech reported that Frontier Energy appointed Monford Group as the fixed-price EPC contractor for the 132MWdc stage one, with Monford taking AU$5 million of its contract value in Frontier's shares.
What Comes After the Credit Allocation
Frontier Energy has revised its Stage One financial forecasts, from first generation to September 2032, to average annual revenue of $76 million, average annual EBITDA of $66 million and average annual free cash flow of $38 million. The company said the credit increase is a one-off sustained uplift from the transition to the revised electricity assessment framework.
