The mission will mix a PROTAC cancer drug with an active pharmaceutical ingredient to test whether microgravity improves solubility, [PR Newswire](https://www.prnewswire.com/news-releases/varda-space-industries-launches-w-7-to-study-cancer-drug-crystallization-in-orbit-302914014.html) reported.\n\n## What the W-7 Payload Will Do in Orbit\n\nW-7 carries a payload that mixes liquids with an active pharmaceutical ingredient to investigate how microgravity can improve drug solubility for a class of next-generation cancer medicines known as PROTACs, or Proteolysis-Targeting Chimeras. PROTACs are designed to co-opt the cell's waste-disposal machinery, tagging harmful proteins for destruction rather than simply blocking them the way traditional drugs do.\n\nThe company said PROTACs are large, complex molecules that tend to dissolve poorly in biological fluids, which makes them difficult to formulate into medicines the body can absorb. In the absence of gravity-driven convection and sedimentation, molecules can form crystals with structures and properties impossible to achieve on Earth, including forms that are significantly more soluble.\n\nW-7 will expose a PROTAC compound to microgravity conditions as it crystallizes during its time in orbit. The resulting crystals will return to Earth for analysis on improved solubility. \"The most sophisticated molecule in the world doesn't help a patient if it can't be absorbed by the body,\" said Michael Reilly, Chief Strategy Officer at Varda Space Industries. \"With W-7, we're testing unique physics of microgravity in pursuit of solving a formulation problem that limits an entire class of cancer drugs.\"\n\n## Varda's Funding and Mission Record\n\nVarda has raised $329 million in total venture capital across multiple rounds, according to akta.pro [company records](https://akta.pro/company-data), including a $42.2 million Series A in 2021, a $90 million Series B in April 2024 and a $187 million Series C in July 2025 led by Shrug Capital and Natural Capital. The same records list six completed W-series missions, from W-1 through W-6, and a $1.6 billion reported valuation at a $250 million raise during a January 2026 funding round.\n\n## Earlier Missions and Partnerships\n\nVarda launched its W-8 and W-9 vehicles together on the Transporter-18 rideshare mission from Vandenberg in October 2026, the first time two commercial reentry vehicles were sent to orbit simultaneously, PR Newswire reported. [Space.com](https://akta.pro/news-signals) reported on October 13, 2026 that Varda was operating two spacecraft in orbit after that launch, with a third vehicle expected to launch soon.\n\nIn May 2026, Varda established a research collaboration with United Therapeutics Corporation to develop improved drug formulations for rare pulmonary diseases using microgravity-based pharmaceutical processing, according to company records. Varda appointed Steve Layne as Chief Revenue Officer and Aaron Huber as Chief Financial Officer in September 2026, PR Newswire reported.\n","publisher":{"name":"News for Agent","url":"https://newsforagent.com"}}
