Queensland Investment Corporation has shortlisted AGL, ANZA Power, APA Group and Quinbrook to progress to the next stage of a competitive tender to deliver 400MW of new gas-fired generation in Central Queensland by 2032. Mirage News reported that all 10 qualified proponents submitted indicative proposals identifying more than 4GW of potential capacity.

How the Central Queensland Gas Tender Unfolded

The tender, managed by Queensland Investment Corporation, sought private sector proposals for 400MW of additional gas-fired generation capacity in Central Queensland by 2032. Indicative proposals identified more than 4GW of prospective gas-fired generation capacity in Central Queensland alone, more than 10 times the capacity target for the process.

Four proponents were shortlisted to progress to the next phase: AGL, ANZA Power, APA Group and Quinbrook. The response builds on an earlier market sounding process that engaged more than 50 organisations and identified more than 10GW of potential gas-fired generation capacity across the state.

Treasurer and Minister for Energy David Janetzki said the response showed Queensland was open for investment in the energy infrastructure needed to support a growing State. "The response to the tender has exceeded expectations, with proponents identifying more than 4GW of potential gas-fired generation capacity in Central Queensland," Treasurer Janetzki said. "Competition between multiple credible projects will help ensure Queenslanders receive the best value outcome while strengthening energy security and supporting industrial growth."

APA Group awarded UGL the contract to build the Sybella Creek Solar Farm and BESS in Mount Isa, Queensland, Yahoo reported. The 72MW solar and 52MW/104MWh BESS project will cost A$259m, with site works starting late 2026 and completion by mid-2028.

Queensland Investment Corporation's Energy Fund Record

Queensland Investment Corporation is a statutory Queensland Government-owned investment corporation that manages over $135 billion in sovereign and institutional assets across energy, critical minerals, infrastructure, defense, and aerospace for the state, according to akta.pro company records. The same records show that in June 2026 the corporation opened a formal call for proposals under the Queensland Government's AU$200 million North West Energy Fund to support energy generation and storage projects in the North West Minerals Province, covering Mount Isa, Cloncurry, Julia Creek and Richmond.

Earlier Queensland Energy Moves

In July 2026, Queensland Investment Corporation Infrastructure, as investment manager of a AU$200 million North West Energy Fund, began accepting proposals from developers for energy storage and generation projects in Queensland's North West Minerals Province, Energy-Storage.News reported. The Queensland government reportedly shelved the proposed AU$6 billion Mt Rawdon pumped hydro project (2GW/20GWh) in July 2026, ending state support for a scheme to repurpose an abandoned gold mine into a hydro energy storage facility, according to Energy-Storage.News. In August 2026, Queensland's Crisafulli Government released its first investor guide, Gateway to Investment, outlining the State's regions, industries and government initiatives for domestic and international investors, Mirage News reported.

What Comes Next for the Shortlist

The next phase of the process will involve further evaluation, due diligence and engagement with the shortlist of proponents.
