The parties will assess the requirements for a potential multi-unit or fleet nuclear program of up to 6.0 GW, including site selection, commercial structures and power purchase agreements, workforce development and grid integration. The evaluation also considers building several smaller-scale gas turbine simple cycle or combined cycle plants ahead of the nuclear plants to accelerate power deployment, and would leverage gas-to-nuclear conversion at retired or retiring generation sites.\n\n\"Governor Braun's leadership reflects a practical and forward-looking commitment to meeting growing electricity demand while preserving affordability and enabling economic growth,\" said Joe St. Julian, President, Nuclear, AtkinsRéalis. Indiana Governor Mike Braun said, \"By exploring this technology, we're evaluating a path to deliver more affordable power while creating the kind of long-term, skilled jobs that strengthen Hoosier communities.\" Hoosier Energy President and CEO Donna Walker said the cooperative \"regularly evaluates technologies and generation resources that may help provide reliable, affordable and sustainable power in the future.\"\n\nHoosier Energy is a not-for-profit generation and transmission cooperative providing wholesale power and services to distribution cooperatives in central and southern Indiana and southeastern Illinois. Those member distribution cooperatives serve more than 700,000 member-consumers.\n\n## AtkinsRéalis' U.S. Licensing Steps\n\nAtkinsRéalis has initiated pre-application engagement with the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission, building on its June 2026 Letter of Intent submission to begin the U.S. licensing process for CANDU technology, according to [akta.pro company records](https://akta.pro/company-data). The first public NRC meeting associated with the licensing process was held in August 2026, and the first of seven planned topical reports, covering the quality assurance program, has been submitted. The NRC's cooperation with the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission provides an opportunity to leverage Canadian regulatory experience as the review advances.\n\n## Earlier CANDU and Nuclear Work\n\nAtkinsRéalis welcomed Indigenous-owned Voyageur Services as a new ambassador to the Canadians for CANDU campaign in October 2026, a campaign led by Jean Chrétien and Mike Harris, the Financial Post reported. In August 2026, Great British Energy – Nuclear commissioned AtkinsRéalis and Mott MacDonald to conduct a technical study on potential sites for new nuclear projects in Scotland, spending £58,282.31, Newcivilengineer reported. AtkinsRéalis also signed a Strategic Alliance Agreement with First American Nuclear to provide exclusive engineering, procurement and construction management for EAGL 1 small modular reactor projects in North America.\n\n## What Comes Next for the Project\n\nThe MOU states that any potential project timeline will depend on site selection, financing, utility or offtake arrangements, applicable regulatory and licensing activities, environmental review, transmission and interconnection planning, community and stakeholder engagement, and other diligence and approvals.\n","publisher":{"name":"News for Agent","url":"https://newsforagent.com"}}
