Orthopedic surgeons had topped the list in each of the previous four years, and their average starting salary fell 12% year over year, to $507,000. The average starting salary for all physicians is $419,000, up from $403,000 last year.\n\nThe average signing bonus offered to physicians reached $49,306, up 29% from $38,215 last year. Signing bonuses were offered in 87% of the search engagements AMN Healthcare conducted, up from 74% the prior year. \"An aging population is driving demand for specialists faster than the supply of physicians in procedural fields like gastroenterology, cardiology and urology can keep up,\" said Robin Johnson, Group President of Nursing, Allied & Physician Solutions at AMN Healthcare.\n\nSpecialists account for every position in the top 10 of the report's starting salaries. After gastroenterology, the highest average starting salaries are interventional cardiology at $650,000, urology at $638,000, otolaryngology at $575,000, radiology at $571,000 and non-invasive cardiology at $568,000.
