talkSPORT is considering a bid for the UK radio rights to Formula 1, a move that could end the BBC's 32-year run as the sport's radio home in the country. The station's head, Liam Fisher, told The Telegraph that F1 would suit talkSPORT's listeners, as reported by Crash.net. The details were reported by Yahoo.
talkSPORT's Pitch for Formula 1 Rights
Fisher said the station is actively exploring the opportunity. "It's another brilliant set of rights. I wouldn't be doing my job if I wasn't actively exploring whether there's an opportunity," he said. "We think the audience goes quite well with the talkSPORT audience. We think there's an opportunity for us to deliver really good amplification for it as well."
TalkSPORT is best known for football coverage, but Fisher said the station wants to reach new listeners by extending into new niches. "Football still is our bread and butter, but we've definitely looked to extend it on the basic understanding that, even if football is your first, second, and third sport, you are probably into something else as well," he said. "So our strategy has been to pick off the events where we believe there is an audience potential that sits well with what we're providing."
The station moved into motorsport this year. In May it secured the rights to six MotoGP races over the summer, broadcast on talkSPORT2 with the TNT Sports commentary team.
The BBC's current deal with F1 gives Radio 5 Live, 5 Sports Extra and BBC Sounds exclusive UK audio rights from 2025 to 2027. Its coverage team includes 1996 world champion Damon Hill, Formula E driver Sam Bird, former W Series driver Alice Powell and ex-F1 mechanic Marc Priestley. The Telegraph reported that the BBC is currently trying to cut costs, after it recently dropped the Boat Race and the Commonwealth Games athletics.
BBC's Recent Rights and Cost Moves
According to akta.pro company records, the BBC extended its Wimbledon broadcast partnership with the All England Lawn Tennis Club in June 2026 through at least 2033, with some reports citing 2037. The same records show the BBC reaches 94% of UK adults monthly, while fewer than 80% pay the £180 annual licence fee, a funding gap driving a £500m cost-cutting programme. The BBC employed about 21,500 people as of March last year, per a Reuters report cited in the records.
Earlier BBC Rights Decisions
The BBC categorically denied allegations that James Acaster was teased by Rob Beckett and Romesh Ranganathan on Celebrity Traitors, PRESSBEE reported in October 2026. The Sun reported in October 2026 that the BBC's education site Bitesize, used by millions of schoolchildren, is accused of promoting open borders and Net Zero policies through a game. The Telegraph reported in October 2026 that the BBC has been accused of breaching impartiality rules after civil servants seconded to its newsroom wrote articles and fact-checked contentious issues.
