Abloy will invest approximately EUR 2.3 million in the energy systems at its Joensuu factory between 2026 and 2028, with Caverion delivering a new energy centre to recover waste heat. The investment was announced by news.cision.com. Abloy is a Finnish manufacturer of digital and mechanical locking systems and access management products serving professional users, according to akta.pro company records.
Caverion's Energy Centre at the Joensuu Factory
Caverion will deliver a new energy centre designed to recover waste heat using heat pump technology, and will install a cooling network for the factory covering more than 21,000 square metres. Caverion will also upgrade the factory's heat recovery and ventilation systems. The energy centre will recover heat generated by the factory's production processes and within the building, and heat pump technology will raise the recovered heat to a usable temperature before directing it either to the factory's own heating system or to the district heating network.
"Once the investment is complete, the factory's annual energy savings will be equivalent to the amount needed to heat around 200 detached homes. An electric car could travel more than 13 million kilometres using the same amount of energy," says Enssi Savolainen, Sustainability Manager at Abloy.
"Outside the heating season, when the factory needs less heat, surplus energy can be fed into Joensuu's district heating network. The annual amount supplied to the network is expected to meet the heating needs of more than 50 detached homes," says Harri Sarkkinen, Caverion's Head of the Joensuu Region.
Sarkkinen said Caverion would like to thank Abloy for its long-standing partnership and for the trust it has placed in its energy expertise. Savolainen said the investment supports Abloy's goal of developing the Joensuu factory sustainably for the long term while improving working conditions for employees, and that upgrading the ventilation and heat recovery systems is a natural next step following earlier building automation improvements. The energy centre will use only natural refrigerants with a low global warming potential, which do not release greenhouse gas emissions into the environment even in the event of a refrigerant leak.
Abloy's Locking Business Behind the Investment
Abloy's recent moves include the 2024 launch of the ABLOY PULSE digital locking system, which extended its offering beyond traditional mechanical locks into a connected digital platform for professional users, according to company records. The company has also developed and marketed the Abloy Cliq digital padlock line for railway applications, combining mechanical robustness with electronic keying and audit capability, and has grown distribution through specialized railway-industry resellers, including a listing with Industry-Railway Suppliers, Inc., to reach North American rail buyers, the same records show.
What Comes Next for the Joensuu Project
The investment runs between 2026 and 2028, and Caverion will deliver the energy centre within that period. Abloy's own announcement is available at abloy.fi.
