Toyota Motor Philippines Corp. warned that flooding in Thailand could disrupt shipments of some imported vehicles, after Toyota suspended production at three Thai plants from October 5 to 10. The Inquirer reported that the company plans to resume operations between October 14 and 19.
Toyota's Thai Plant Shutdown and Philippine Exposure
Floods have inundated parts of Thailand since mid-September, resulting in at least 71 deaths and disrupting operations at several automakers and parts manufacturers, including Toyota's three manufacturing plants in the country. Toyota suspended production at its Samrong, Ban Pho and Gateway plants from October 5 to 10, with operations planned to resume between October 14 and 19.
Toyota Motor Philippines senior vice president Sherwin Chua-Lim said the disruptions could eventually affect the local market, as the company sources several models from Thailand, including the Ativ, Corolla, Fortuner, Corolla Cross, Hilux and Land Cruiser FJ. "Currently, it has no impact because it's very recent," Chua-Lim told reporters. "If the supply is affected, it will impact our Q4 targets. But we have other models in stock that can replace those. I don't think it will be a big number that will affect the total in Q4," he added.
Chua-Lim said Toyota Motor Philippines is coordinating with its Thai counterpart to determine which models and how many vehicles the production interruptions may affect. Thailand is a major manufacturing base for Toyota in Southeast Asia, with its three plants having a combined annual production capacity of 770,000 vehicles. The Gateway plant accounts for 300,000 units, followed by Samrong with 240,000 and Ban Pho with 230,000. Toyota's Philippine manufacturing operations have an annual capacity of 60,000 completely knocked-down vehicle units, primarily covering the Vios, Tamaraw and Innova models.
