The railcar is one of 50 built through the collaboration, [news.cision.com](https://news.cision.com/ssab/r/ssab--greenbrier-and-alter-showcase-circular-steel-collaboration-at-ssab-iowa,c4409332) reported.\n\n## How the SSAB Iowa Circular Steel System Works\n\nNearly 70 community leaders, elected officials, higher education representatives and industry stakeholders gathered at SSAB Iowa for the event, which included presentations from executives of all three companies and a trackside viewing of the gondola railcar outside SSAB Iowa's administration facility.\n\nAlter processes recycled metal that is used to produce SSAB Zero steel at SSAB Iowa. Greenbrier then manufactures that steel into railcars, which transport Alter's recycled metal back to SSAB Iowa. SSAB Zero steel is produced exclusively at SSAB Iowa using recycled steel and fossil-free electricity, resulting in near-zero fossil carbon emissions from steel production.\n\n\"This joint effort demonstrates what's possible when manufacturers, recyclers and steel producers work together toward a common goal,\" said Tom Cox, President of SSAB Americas. \"Today, our guests had the opportunity to see a circular steel system in action.\"\n\nBrian Comstock, Executive Vice President and President, the Americas of The Greenbrier Companies, said the railcars \"show how advanced manufacturing and strong partnerships support both performance and sustainability.\" Jack Grundfest, President and CEO of [Alter Trading](https://akta.pro/company-profiles/00093qp/alter-trading), said the project \"demonstrates how recycled materials can continue creating value through multiple lifecycles.\"\n\n## SSAB's Greenbrier Railcar Collaboration on Record\n\nAccording to [akta.pro company records](https://akta.pro/company-data), the Greenbrier collaboration is a circular economy project in which Greenbrier produces 50 gondola railcars using SSAB Zero near-zero emissions steel from recycled materials, after which the railcars transport recycled metals directly back to SSAB's Iowa plant. The same records show SSAB appointed Tom Cox as Head of SSAB Americas effective February 1, 2026, promoting the long-tenured Iowa general manager to lead the region including the Montpelier electric arc furnace and Iowa fossil-free steel facility.\n\n## Earlier SSAB Moves Before the Iowa Event\n\nSSAB began construction of a new quenching line in Oxelösund, with production planned for 2030, in an investment of SEK 3.3 billion that will add about 100,000 tonnes of annual capacity for advanced wear-resistant and protection steels, news.cision.com reported in October 2026. In June 2026, SSAB partnered with SMS group to build a gas atomisation plant at Oxelösund, expanding metal-powder capacity for additive manufacturing to about 350 tonnes per year by the first quarter of 2028 and launching Armox 500 AM Powder, according to akta.pro company records.\n\n## SSAB's Next Scheduled Update\n\nSSAB will publish its third-quarter 2026 report on October 28, 2026, at 7:30am CET, with a briefing at 9:30am CET presented by President and CEO Johnny Sjöström and CFO Leena Craelius, The future of trading reported.\n","publisher":{"name":"News for Agent","url":"https://newsforagent.com"}}
